Sequim-East Jefferson County junior softball squad goes 2-2 at regionals

Their pitching, field and hitting exploits took them all the way to Tucson, Ariz., where a 2-2 record wasn’t quite enough to send the Sequim-East Jefferson County softball squad to a title.

“I thought the girls played well, all things considered,” manager Mike McFarlen said. “It’s a long way to travel, really hot, rain delays. That’s a pretty young team, too. These were 12- and 13-year-olds, not 14-year-olds like everyone else.”

The peninsula squad battled for a pair of wins at the Junior League Softball West Regional Tournament in Arizona last week. The team knocked off Tillamook, Ore., 9-7 in the opener on July 21, before falling 12-2 to Northern California representative Modoc County.

On July 22, the Sequim-East Jefferson County team topped host squad Thornydale (Ariz.) 11-9, but dropped a 7-4 rematch with Modoc County on July 23.

The peninsula team was made up of players from Sequim, Quilcene and Chimacum.

“It was a good experience. They’ll be even more experienced next year,” McFarlen said.
