DISTRICT
A public forum for school board candidates is planned from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, at the Helen Haller Elementary School gymnasium, 350 W. Fir St. Childcare and refreshments will be provided. This event is sponsored by the Sequim School District and the Clallam County League of Women Voters.
Because of construction closure at the intersection of Chicken Coop Road, Zaccardo and Highway 101 near the Tribal Center, the Minnie Mouse bus will need to make some adjustments.
The district will pick up your students 10 minutes earlier than their regularly scheduled times; plan to have them out at their stops and ready. In the afternoon, bus drivers will be dropping students off 10 minutes later. This will affect all students who ride the Minnie Mouse Bus, not just the ones who live on Chicken Coop.
At this time, the closure is supposed to last for one week and is slated to finish Oct. 6. Call the Transportation Department as 360-582-2374 for more information.
The Sequim School District announces an open referral process through Nov. 30 for students currently in grades kindergarten-12th grade who may qualify for Highly Capable (Hi-Cap) Program Services. Anyone from the community may refer students, including teachers, parents, staff, friends, students, members of the community, etc. If you are unsure of the characteristics of highly capable learners, see www.sequim.k12.wa.us/Page/4523.
GREYWOLF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Staff and students at Greywolf Elementary School gave students from Sequim’s sister city of Shiso, Japan, a grand tour of our school including key help from fifth-grade hosts Jorel Bessey, Jillian Johnston, Abby Henning, Dreyden Endicott, Gracie Gardner and Ethan Staples, along with teachers Kim Knudson and Jennifer Lopez and principal Donna Hudson.
HELEN HALLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
The third-grade students in Emily Ellefson’s class have been busy writing opinion paragraphs. After listening to the classic story “Wind in the Willows,” the students formed their own opinion about Toad. The students agreed that Toad is a very irresponsible character.
Read their paragraphs below to see if you agree with them:
Surely you would agree that Toad from the Wind in the Willows is very irresponsible. First of all, Toad is dishonest. For example, he said he was a washer woman but he wasn’t. Secondly, Toad is mean to everyone. In the story he talked back to the police. Lastly, Toad is reckless. For example he drove at a high speed limit. So that’s why you should agree with me that Toad is very irresponsible.
— Leia Baker Hendrickson
Don’t you think that Toad is an irresponsible character in the “Wind in the Willows”? The first reason is that Toad lies. For example, Toad tricked people with his washerwoman disguise. The second reason is Toad is mean. In the story he ignored people in the motorcar. The final reason is he’s dishonest. Toad said he would listen to friends but he didn’t. So that’s why you should agree with me that Toad is irresponsible.

Don’t you think Toad is an irresponsible character in “Wind in the Willows”? First of all, Toad is dishonest. For example he tricked people by dressing as a washerwoman in the story. Secondly, Toad is reckless. For example, in the motorcar Toad speeds up into the water. The third and final reason in the story is that Toad blames others for his problems. For example, he didn’t accept the consequences for his behavior. So that is why I think Toad is an irresponsible character.

SEQUIM HIGH SCHOOL
On Saturday, Sept. 30, 25 members of the Sequim High School leadership class made their way to Port Williams beach for their first quarterly service project of the year. From 9-10 a.m., members of the class fanned out in both directions, walking the beach, picking up trash, and making plans for Homecoming week, which starts Oct. 9.
The high school’s Associated Student Body, which comprises a majority of the leadership class, has chosen “Harmony” as their theme this year; this service project is one example of the class putting their motto into action. The leadership class is looking for ideas for their next quarterly service project which will take place during the winter months.
Email Sean O’Mera, Sequim High School ASB Adviser and Leadership class teacher, with any suggestions, at somera@sequim.k12.wa.us.
