Gymnastics: Sequim’s Pfeffer, Sweet earn district-qualifying scores

Seven athletes from a combined Sequim-Port Angeles gymnastics squad are headed to the West Central District finals after earning individual places at a sub-district meet Feb. 1 in Fife.
Sequim’s Lesea Pfeffer qualified in the three events and teammate Elizabeth Sweet qualified in the vault, joining a quintet of Roughriders at districts.
Pfeffer placed fifth among qualifying individuals in the vault with a 7.6, while Sweet earned a 7.5 to place sixth. Pfeffer took third in the floor exercise with an 8.00, and also placed fourth on the balance beam with 7.25 points.
Port Angeles’ Cassii Middlestead took second among qualifying individuals with 31.85 all-around points. Fellow Roughriders Julienne Jacobs (floor exercise, second, and uneven bars, fifth), Cassidy Tamburro (balance beam, third, and uneven bars, fourth), Maizie Tucker (vault, seventh) and Halle Coventon (balance beam, eighth) also qualified for districts.
Capital (151 team points) and Kingston (144) took the sub-regional’s two team berths to state, with Timberline placing third (142) and Sequim-Port Angeles in fourth (139).
Kingston’s Mikka Yamane was the sub-regional top scorer in three of four individual events and scored 35.85 all-around points, missing a clean sweep by placing second on the balance beam.
The district meet is set for Saturday, Feb. 10, at Auburn Mountainview High School in Auburn. The top two teams, nine individuals (per event) and three all-around gymnasts advance from the district meet to the class 1A/2A/3A state meet set for Feb. 15-17 in Tacoma.
