Last week’s aptly-named “Flying A” track meet was a showcase for some of the speediest athletes in the Olympic League — and for Sequim’s boys and Port Angeles girls, a spotlight for two league powerhouses.

The Wolves’ boys dominated the March 29 “Flying A” Retro track and field meet with 15 first-place finishes and six second-place efforts to rack up a meet-best 183 team points, out-pacing Port Angeles’ boys (119.5) along with smaller schools Neah Bay (31.5), Clallam Bay (7) and Crescent (6).

In his second -ever track meet, SHS senior Payton Glasser earned a trio of first-place finishes, winning the high jump (5-8), shot put (37-2) and discus (115 feet); he was second in the long jump as well (17-7).

Liam Byrne scored a pair of event victories, winning the 1,600 meters in a personal best 5:14 and topping the field in the pole vault at 11 feet, 6 inches.

Riley Martin earned a personal-best in the 110 high hurdles with a 15.72 effort — an Olympic League best and third-best mark among 2A boys in the state among early-season efforts.

Martin also took first in the 300 hurdles with a 42.75 mark. Teammate Fischer Jensen placed second in both hurdles events, setting personal bests in the 110 (17:14) and 300 (44.29).

Logan set a personal best with an 18-2.5 leap in the long jump, good for first place.

Silas Isenberger edged teammates Laxson and Darren Salazar in the 100-meter sprint with an 11.72 mark.

Salazar went on to set a personal best in winning the 200 meters in 24.07 seconds, the best mark in the Olympic League this spring.

Sequim teammates Murray Bingham (2:00), Alec Shingleton (2:07) and Jakob Pyeatt (2:18) swept the top three places in the 800 meters, with Bingham’s and Shingleton’s marks the best in the Olympic League thus far.

Trey Brouillard cruised to a two-second victory in the 400 meters (56.42), and Riley Cowan out-threw the field in the javelin with an event-best 150 feet, 6 inches. Cowan was third in the shot put (35-5).

Sequim also swept both boys’ relay events. The Wolves won the 4×100 in 45.97 seconds, and took first and second place in the 4×400 relay (3:35 and 4:01).

Sequim’s girls placed third at the “Flying A” meet with 54 team points, behind Port Angeles (217.5) and Clallam Bay (61).

SHS senior Elizabeth Sweet earned two first-place marks, clearing 10 feet in the pole vault to match a personal best she set at the state 2A meet as a sophomore, and a 30-foot, 8.5-inch mark in the triple jump.

Sequim’s relay squad — of Daisy Ryan, Kiara Pierson, Mary McAleer and Telicia Busby — stepped up to win both 4×100 (54.83 seconds) and 4×200 races (1:57).

Lindsey Leader was second in the shot put (29-5) and third in the javelin (69-10).

Busby was third in the 100 meters (14.27) and Gabby Happe was fourth in the long jump (12-1).

A small roster last kept Sequim out of seven of the “Flying A” meet’s events.

Port Angeles sister duo Gracie and Millie Long dominated much of the meet, with Gracie winning the 800 meters in 2:25, the 1,600 meters in 5:20 and 3,200 meters in 11:53 — all league-best marks — and Millie winning the 100-meter hurdles (16.68) and 300-meter hurdles (48.96), also league-best efforts.

Looking ahead

Sequim athletes are off for spring break until April 10, when they take on Bremerton, Chimacum and host North Mason in Belfair on April 10. Select SHS tracksters compete at the Terrace Invitational on April 14 in Edmonds.

The Wolves host their lone home meet of the 2018 season on Wednesday, April 18, hosting Olympic, North Kitsap and Coupeville.
