GREYWOLF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Second-grade students at Greywolf Elementary recently got a visit from representatives at the Dungeness River Audubon Center. Students learned about birds native to our area — how they live, what they eat and how they are helpful to our environment. They got to see up-close examples as well as ask questions.
During library time, Greywolf students researched topics related to Earth Day. Then, to celebrate both Earth Day and National Poetry month, they wrote poems using nouns and verbs. Ee brainstormed as a class, librarian Dena Riccobene says.
Here are more samples of their work:

HELEN HALLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Students in Gail Kite’s class were invited to write a poem, personal narrative or expository paragraph about “Summer.”
Here are more of their writings:
Oh, by the summer’s days
And the sun’s warm gaze
The beach’s cold water
How often do I ponder
When I hear a lion’s roar
To keep awake throughout the night
The sun sets, moons arise, moonlight sky’s light
Upon the night’s end
The sun will rise once again
Crow’s will fly
They’ll make shades of sky
Birds will hum wonderful notes
Songs of castles with moats
Cherry leaves will fall after blossoms
Yin will change and chase after Yang
Summer will end for today
For you see, fall has come
Yet again to see us all
— Draxxis Anderson
This summer I am looking forward to playing soccer. I want to go the beach. I’d like to go camping in my backyard. I want to go to Seattle. I want to walk on trails in the forest and give my dog a walk every day. I want to go to church every Sunday. I want to travel different places in Washington. I want to go to summer camp. I want to play in a swimming pool. I want to go to the Woodland Park Zoo. I want to go to amazing places. I also want to play in the sprinkler. And last but not least, I want to go to the movie theater and see “The Incredibles 2” and the new “Jurassic World.” Those are all the things I am looking forward to this summer. And also, I hope you have a great summer, too!!

I love the summer
It’s not a big bummer
Sometimes I go to the ocean
Sunscreen works like a potion
There is usually lots of sun
And being outside is fun
Sometimes I ride a horse
And that is fun, of course
I always like seeing my family
And you don’t have to keep tellin’ me
Cause I already know
That summer is fun
Except for the fact I might have to mow!
