Call for entries for ‘Go Figure’ exhibit

The City Arts Advisory Commission is seeking entries of art, in any medium, for the next exhibit to be displayed in the lobby of the Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar St.; the theme for this quarterly exhibit is “Go Figure.”

Deadline for submissions is Nov. 9.

The exhibit will be on display from Jan. 1-March 31.

All entries will be juried by the commission. An artist reception will take place on Jan. 4.

Toastmasters to screen public speaking championships

Sequim’s Toastmasters Club hosts a screening of the 2018 Toastmasters World Championship of Public Speaking, recorded live in Chicago, from 6-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, at “The Gathering Place” in Sunland, 135 Fairway Dr.

Admission is free, though reservations requested via EventBrite (2018WorldChamps.eventbrite.com).

“I represented our District in Chicago at the International Speech contest Semi-Finals, but I did not place,” club president Lindy MacLaine said. “I gave my speech as well as I know how—there was a wealth of talent there. I was proud to have made it that far.”

Skwim Toastmasters normally meets 7-8:30 p.m. the first and third Tuesdays of each month at the Gathering Place.

Open mic at Rainshadow Coffee

Hosted by the Bread and Gravy band, Rainshadow Coffee at 157 W. Cedar St. hosts open mic events on Thursdays from 5:30-8:30 p.m. All ages and all acts are welcome; participants are asked to keep performances family-friendly.

Blue Whole Gallery calls for artists

The Blue Whole Gallery presents a juried competition in January 2019.

Artists, 18 and older may apply. All two-dimensional media is eligible, including painting, photography and digital art. No more than three entries per artist are allowed, and no more than 28 inches on the longest side.

Works must be hand delivered to the Blue Whole Gallery, 129 W. Washington St., between Dec. 8-11 during regular working hours.

Winners are announced at a reception on Jan. 4 and presented in the windows of the Blue Whole Gallery in a show that runs Jan. 4-29.

Competition judges are Lynne Armstrong, Carol Janda and Karen Rozbicki Stringer.

PC hosts ‘Not Even Nature’ exhibit

Through the layering of mythology, iconography and personal narrative, sculptor Crista Ann Ames explores how our own animal nature relates to the ways we establish and sustain personal relationships in “Not Even Nature,” her solo exhibition on display in Peninsula College’s PUB Gallery of Art, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles, through Oct. 25.

The exhibit features work in ceramics, wood and textiles. Ames hosts a lecture in the Little Theater beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 25, with a reception following at 1:30 p.m. in the gallery.

Both the solo exhibition and the presentation are free and open to the public.
