Buck Ellard at grange
Enjoy a dinner and dance with the Buck Ellard Band from 5:30-8 p.m. Sunday, May 19, at the Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road.
The event is a Father’s Day dance with dinner that includes salads, desserts plus coffee, tea and water. Cost for both dinner and dance is $10 per person. For more information, call Loretta at 360-582-0100.
Readings to feature Erickson, McGinnis
Sequim’s Fourth Friday Readings are scheduled for 6:15 p.m. on May 24 in the media room at The Lodge, 660 Evergreen Farm Way. Featured writers are Eva McGinnis and Susan Erickson, followed by five-minute open mic readings.
Participants are asked to bring poems, short-short stories or memoir/novel snippets, and to rehearse in advance as readings are timed.

Book group to talk ‘Fahrenheit 451’
The Novel Conversations Book Discussion Group meets to talk about Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451” at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave. The classic novel details how, in a not too distant future, humans live a seemingly care-free existence where they’re happy and productive — though, there is a “price” for this life: they must place special drops in their eyes daily and follow the rules perfectly, including the rule that they never own or read books.
To participate, simply read the book and attend the discussion; no reservations are needed, and drop-ins are welcome.

Monday Musicale with PAHS orchestra
Port Angeles Monday Musicale’s monthly meeting will be held at noon on May 20 at the Queen of Angels Catholic Church’s fellowship Hall, 209 W. 11th St., Port Angeles. The meeting will be followed by a free concert featuring the Port Angeles High School’s Chamber Orchestra, led by James Ray.
Monday Musicale recently concluded a scholarship audition concert on May 5, where two Port Angeles students were awarded scholarships.
Monday Musicale meets the third Monday of the month. Proceeds from memberships are used for scholarships for local high school seniors. For more information, call Gail McDonald at 360-477-8601.
Submissions sought for anthology
The deadline to submit work to the Olympic Peninsula Authors’ third anthology is June 1.
The trade-size paperback will be published by Olympic Peninsula Authors, available in print and Kindle format, as well as featured at Peninsula events and retailers. Submissions will be assessed by Linda B. Myers or Heidi Hansen, both founders of Olympic Peninsula Authors. Possible edits may be suggested.
Prose submissions of no more than 5,000 words, include short stories, essays, memoirs will be considered — but no excerpts from longer works.
The goal of the group is to produce opportunities to increase awareness and sales for talented local authors. “Local” includes authors who live on and/or write about life on the Olympic Peninsula.

OPAA speaker to talk juried show entries
Olympic Peninsula Art Association hosts its monthly meeting from 9:30 a.m.-noon Thursday, May 23, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave. As well as conducting general business, attendees will have the opportunity to view works by members and get to know each other. In this month’s demonstration, Linda Stadtmiller talks about entering juried shows. Stadtmiller has helped process juried shows for more than 18 years and will speak on how to enter artwork that looks good without having to use an expensive camera or professional photographer.
Elks host New Iberians
New Iberians Zydeco & Blues Band bring Zydeco, Cajun, blues and “swamp pop” to the stage at the Sequim Elks Lodge, 143 Port Williams Road, from 6-8:30 p.m., $10 (members $8) on Friday, May 24.
The New Iberians started back in the 1990s as a Portland, Ore., band called Mumbo Gumbo. Late in that decade accordion player Evan Shlaes changed the band name to the New Iberians to pay homage to his favorite town in Louisiana.
The New Iberians often tour up and down the West Coast and have ventured as far east as Chicago. They’ve played many festivals, including the Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival, Portland Rose Festival, The Bite of Oregon and Bones and Brew.

Flamenco artist performs
Savannah Fuentes, a Seattle-based Flamenco artist,brings her latest her work — “Oceans, Flamenco en Vivo “ — to the Old Dungeness Schoolhouse in Sequim on Tuesday, May 28, starting at 7:30 p.m.
The water-themed, all ages presentation features singer/percussionist Jose Moreno and guitarist Pedro Cortes. Both musicians are third generation Spanish Flamenco artists and live in New York City.

The all-ages performances are the third and fourth engagements of a 29-date that tour that begins in Bellingham and ends in Southern California.
