Women and Shakespeare
Anna Andersen will discuss women and Shakespeare at “Women and Shakespeare” a dessert and wine talk Friday, July 12, at the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, 1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd. Peninsula College professor Janet Lucas and Shakespearean director Anna Andersen will discuss the arts center’s forthcoming production of “The Taming of the Shrew,” along with other portrayals of strong women in the bard’s plays. The #MeToo movement and modern “Shrew” versions will also be part of the discussion. Tickets are $20 including fine desserts and wine, with proceeds benefiting the nonprofit arts center. ‘Shakespeare in the Woods’
The Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, 1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd., hosts productions of “The Taming for the Shrew” at 6 p.m. each Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 19-Aug. 4, in the Webster’s Woods Sculpture Park.
The free productions are are appropriate for all ages, organizers say, and are directed by Anna Andersen and Samantha Weinert.

Buck Ellard at the grange
The Buck Ellard Band plays country favorites from 5:30-8 p.m. on Sunday, July 21, at the Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road. The $10 admission fee also buys dinner.
‘Dammed to extinction’ film set to screen
The Magic of Cinema series and DamSense host a screening of “Dammed to Extinction” from 6:30-9 p.m. Thursday, July 11, at the Maier Performance Hall at peninsula College, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.
The film that tells the story of a population of killer whales hunting Chinook salmon along the Pacific Coast, and the deadly pattern that has developed as salmon numbers plummet and orcas starve. Whale scientist Ken Balcomb argues that removing dams may be the best way to help save these animals.
This screening will be followed by a discussion with Balcomb and Howard Garrett, both orcas experts; they will be joined by salmon expert Chris Pinney and dam expert/DamSense member Jim Waddell.
The event is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted at the screening.

Artist’s work picked for NW show
Sequim artist Susan Gansert Shaw’s painting “The Joy Birds” was selected to show in the Northwest Watercolor Society’s 2019 Signature Exhibition at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle.
The show runs July 11-Oct. 6, with an awards reception on Saturday, July 13.
The Northwest Watercolor Society was founded in 1939 and has opened membership to watermedia artists worldwide.
