Tribe sets veterans artifacts event

The Jamestown S’Klallam Tribal Library hosts “Veteran’s Memorial Artifacts” at 6 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, Aug. 7, at 1033 Old Blyn Highway in Blyn.

Tribal Historic Preservation Officer David Brownell will give a presentation about information and artifacts from the excavation at the Veteran’s memorial on the Blyn Tribal campus. Discover how the S’Klallam have been adept at managing the rich resources of Sequim Bay for thousands of years, and what the pre-contact Sequim Bay environment was like.

This event is open to the public and is appropriate for all ages, event organizers say.

Friends of Sequim Library sale set

The Friends of Sequim Library hosts its monthly book sale from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Friends building behind the Sequim Library at 630 N. Sequim Ave.

This month’s sale features 25 novels in the “Secrets of the Blue Hill Library” series by Emily Thomas, as well as other novels published by Guideposts and a collection of movie memorabilia from the 1950s that includes lobby cards, press packets and magazines. There is a collection of more than 700 ice hockey trading cards. Of historical interest are several books about Western ghost towns. Also available is current fiction, self-help, art books and cookbooks.

Proceeds from the sale benefit children’s and adult programs at the Sequim Library.

Mosaic’s monthly dance set

It’s a cruising adventure aboard the good ship Mosaic at Clallam Mosaic’s monthly dance from noon-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 510 E. Park Ave., Port Angeles..

The dance, hosted by a local nonprofit empowering people with special needs, costs $8 at the door; accompanying caregivers attend for free, though donations are accepted to defray the costs.

A light meal features tacos, Mexican coleslaw, sugar free cookies and other desserts. Coffee, tea and water will be available.

Bowl for United Way funds

United Way of Clallam County invites to the community to a bowling fundraiser supporting literacy in memory of Claudia “Mrs. K” Elkhart. The second-annual Bowling for Books is 6-9 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 12, at Laurel Lanes, 108 W. Eighth St.

“(Elkhart) inspired generations of readers as the librarian at Jefferson Elementary School (and) … believed strongly in Clallam County Literacy Council’s mission: to promote and support literacy in our community,” United Way officials say.

Participants are asked to bring a new children’s book to the event. Books will be donated to Clallam County Literacy Council (an affinity group of United Way) and each book donation earns a raffle ticket for prizes. Thanks to event sponsor 7 Cedars Casino, 100 percent of event proceeds are donated to United Way to support local education programs.

Space is limited and last year’s event sold out. Tickets are $25/bowler; register up to a team of four.

Grange group sets monthly meeting

The Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road, hosts a monthly meeting starting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14. The public is welcome.

“We would love to have you come and see what we are all about and what the grange is doing over the next couple of months in the community,” grange members say.

After the meeting, attendees are welcome to join grange members in the kitchen for a snack and conversation.

VHOCC moves headquarters

Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County has moved its main location to 829 E. Eighth St., Port Angeles, at the corner of Race St. — about three blocks from the organization’s previous location.

Those needing to borrow equipment should call 360-452-1511 to make an appointment on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, as all of VHOCC’s medical equipment is stored in the old location while a new storage facility is being built.

Learn about Burke Museum’s bird studies at series

Learn more about he University of Washington’s Burke Museum at the next Learn By the Light of the Moon Speaker Series, set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center’s outdoor amphitheater at Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road.

John Klicka, Curator of Birds at the University of Washington’s Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture/Department of Biology, presents “Behind the scenes at the Burke Museum: Recent and ongoing bird studies.” He will be reviewing some of research he and students have been involved with in the last couple of years — including generated genetic data that provides a fresh perspective on avian relationships and the evolution of various traits and behaviors of birds.

Applications due Aug. 15 for Soroptimist

scholarships

Soroptimist International of Sequim is accepting applications for three $2,000 continuing education scholarships for the 2019-20 academic year.

Applicants must be female graduates of Sequim High School or its GED program, or must have a current legal address within the Sequim School District.

Applicants must have completed at least one year of post-secondary education and be enrolled, or planning to enroll, in college for the 2019-20 school year.
