Bowling: McKeown, Updike qualify for state tourney

After a teammate had to miss the district tourney, Sequim High bowler Madison McKeown got a second chance — and made the most of it.

The SHS senior bowled a three-game, 473-pin series — including a 170-pin third game — to place seventh overall at the district tourney, held at Paradise Lanes in Parkland on Jan. 29, to earn a return trip to state.

She’ll have some company, too. Freshman Nikoline Updike bowled a 411-pin series, with a tourney-best 149-pin first game, to place eighth out of district participants who didn’t qualify with their team.

The pair will compete for top spots at the state 1A/2A tourney set for Feb. 3-5 at Narrows Plaza Bowl in University Place.

McKeown is no stranger to the big bowling stage; she tied for 20th place at state as a freshman and placed 36th at state as a sophomore. In the truncated 2020 season, McKeown was 11th at the league finals.

Sequim teammate Morgan Tate, bowled a 349-pin series at districts, her best a 118-pin first game.
