Bunco returns to help Seattle Children’s Hospital

Bunco is back and it’s an “Italian Buffet Special” at the Sequim Guild of Seattle Children’s Hospital’s September Bunco Party set for noon-3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. 5th Ave. Doors open at 11:30 a.m.

Win prizes playing Bunco and enjoy an Italian-themed buffet lunch made by Guild members of lasagna, spaghetti and more, including an Italian “twist” on their popular desserts. Bid on 25 unique choices at the silent auction, including many special Autumn items.

Admission is $15 at the door, and all proceeds go to Seattle Children’s Hospital for uncompensated care and research.

Developmental playgroup to meet

Clallam County Parent to Parent and Clallam Mosaic, will be hosting a monthly developmental playgroup, Play with a Purpose, from 9:30-11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Sequim YMCA, 610 N. Fifth Ave.

This free playgroup for children ages 0-5 is designed to help parents and their children who are demonstrating developmental delays or disabilities to work together to meet the child’s cognitive, social and developmental goals. Families are invited to drop in, play, and grow together. Attendees do not need to be a member of the YMCA; just bring identification and check in at the front desk.

The playgroup sessions will address gross and fine motor development, expressive and receptive language communication, social and emotional skills, adaptive and self-care skills, and feeding issues.

This parent participation group will be facilitated by Clallam Co. Parent to Parent (P2P) coordinator Catherine McKinney, and will be led by family support Laura Hogan-Reyes.

Siblings are welcome to attend. COVID protocols will be observed as required by the YMCA.

The next Play with a Purpose sessions are scheduled for Oct. 15, Nov. 19 and Dec. 17.

Clallam County Parent to Parent offers support and advocacy to families caring for individuals with special needs, developing opportunities for families to come together to learn, teach each other, grow and form community.

Guild’s thrift shop open

The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild Thrift Shop at 204 W. Bell St. will be open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, Sept. 15-17. All blue tag items are $1. Featured items include a new selection of framed artwork (50 percent off).

All proceeds are donated to local medical needs, including: Sequim Free Clinic; Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County; Sequim fire district station EMT needs; Peninsula College nursing scholarships, and Olympic Medical Center.

Donations are accepted 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, and when the shop is open for business.

Learn more about ‘Aging in Place’

The North Olympic Library System (NOLS) offers Intentional Aging, a monthly discussion group for adults. This program explores topics and practices through book discussions, activities, presenters and more.

Meetings are held at 11 a.m. on the third Tuesday of every month on Zoom. Attending monthly is encouraged, but all are welcome to join any meeting, organizers say.

The Sept. 20 discussion is “Aging in Place.” As part of the discussion, a representative from Habitat for Humanity will introduce the repair programs, “Aging in Place” and “Home Preservation.”

Apply for 2023 Clallam County Fair royalty

Applications for the 2023 Clallam County Fair Royalty are now available. These positions are open to any high school students in grades 9-12 with grade-point-averages of 2.00 average or better. Student does not have to be members of 4H or FFA to apply.

Fair Royalty are ambassadors for the fair by attending parades, community events and all four days of the 2023 Clallam County fair, set for Aug. 17-20. Royalty court members are eligible for scholarships.

Applicants must bring a completed application which includes sponsor form. A parent or responsible adult needs to be present.

The deadline and orientation is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at the fairground kitchen at the Clallam County Fairgrounds, 1608 W. 16th St., Port Angeles.

Office to help disabled veterans closed for training

The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) office in the Worksource building, 810 W. Brackett Road, will be closed Wednesday, Sept. 14, for staff training. The office will be open the following Wednesday (Sept. 21).

The office is normally open 10 a.m.-3 p.m. every Wednesday to serve veterans who are needing help with claims or other information. Services are free and veterans do not have to be members of DAV to receive assistance. No appointment is necessary. Masks are required upon entrance.

Fair seeks 2023 theme

Organizers of the 2023 Clallam County Fair are seeking a theme for the 2023 event set for Aug. 17-20.

Winner of the theme contest receive $100, two day fair passes and two fair-themed T-shirts.

The contest is open to Clallam County residents, with no age limit. The theme must be seven words or less and cannot use Clallam County in the slogan. Participants may submit up to 10 entries.

The winning theme will be chosen on basis of creativity, originality, fair appropriateness and ease of decorating and displaying the theme, organizers say.

The deadline for submittal(s) is Saturday, Oct. 1. Include name, phone, email, and address along with theme ideas: by mail to: Clallam County Fair, 1608 16th Street, Port Angeles 98363; by fax, to 360-417-2547, or email the fair manager at shari.ioffrida@clallamcountywa.gov.

Tax-Aide volunteer opportunity available

Community members who are good with forms and instructions, have strong basic computer skills and enjoy helping people are encouraged to become an IRS-certified Tax-Aide volunteer.

Sponsored by AARP and the IRS, the Tax-Aide program offers free tax preparation services. Volunteers don’t need to be an AARP member to help out.

Cemetery commission changes meeting date

The Gardiner Community Cemetery Commissioner’s September meeting has changed to 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, at the Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road.

The meeting was originally slated for Sept. 8.

The remainder of the year’s meetings will be held at 4 p.m. on the second Thursday of every month; the public is invited to attend.
