Pottery demo set at Blue Whole Gallery
Sequim’s Blue Whole Gallery, 129 W. Washington St., is sponsoring a free, two-hour pottery demonstration by member potter and gallery vice president Janet Piccola, from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11.
Piccola’s “versatile and original pottery techniques transform hunky, lumpy clay into lovely, functional ceramics,” gallery representatives said.
Piccola began her exploration with clay in 2010. Her art includes working clay from hand and from a potter’s wheel.
“I love to share my knowledge and techniques to encourage people to learn more about the artistry of working with clay,” she said. “Understanding the skill and knowledge needed to make pottery can be valuable in appreciating the art form.”
The gallery will also have a photo opportunity for people and their Valentine photographed at BWG potter’s wheel (a la “Ghost”).
The Blue Whole Gallery is an artist’s cooperative serving Sequim artists the community for more than 25 years.Visit bluewholegallery.com.
Fiddlers to meet in Sequim
The Washington Old Time Fiddlers Association meets from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 Fifth Ave.
The meeting includes a jam session from 10 am.-1 p.m., followed by a performance from 1-2 p.m.
Association members will be playing “old time” music, a genre of North American folk music played on acoustic instruments generally centering on a combination of fiddle and plucked string instruments, including the guitar, banjo and mandolin, dobros, dulcimers, autoharps and ukuleles.
Attendees are invited to play or just listen and learn about this traditional style of music.
There is no charge to attend, though donations in support of a youth scholarship program are welcome. Snacks to share are also appreciated.
PC to host jazz concert
The David Jones Trio — comprised of Jones, Ted Enderle and Terry Smith — looks to engage listeners with a range of jazz numbers at Peninsula College’s Feb. 9 Studium Generale.
The free event will be held in the Little Theater on the main campus, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles, starting at 12:35 pm.
Smith’s drumming includes a range of musical styles including blues, rock, R&B/funk, jazz and Americana. Over the course of a 50-year career, he has opened shows for bands ranging from Stevie Ray Vaughan to the Jazz Crusaders to Night Ranger and others.
More recently, he has performed onstage with Northwest Jazz icons Dmitri Matheny, Mark Lewis, and the Friends of Brubeck tribute show.
Originally from Philadelphia, bassist Enderle studied double bass with noted jazz bassist Al Stauffer. He has played professionally around the Pacific Northwest for three decades and has performed on both coasts with instrumentalists Larry McKenna, Chuck Anderson, Hadley Caliman, Barney McClure and others.
Jones is the head of Peninsula College’s music program and has served as director of PC’s jazz ensemble since 2008. His trio has backed Dmitiri Matheny, Mark Lewis and John Stowell as well as performing several times in the Port Angeles area over the past few years. Dr. Jones is also a noted jazz composer/arranger whose works have been performed by the Bob Curnow Big Band, Jazz Police, Jim Cutler Big Band, Straight No Chaser Big Band (UK), and many college jazz ensembles.

‘Calendar Girls’ auditions scheduled
Auditions for Olympic Theatre Arts’ “Calendar Girls,” by Tim Firth, are set for Saturday, Feb. 11, Monday, Feb. 13, and Wednesday, Feb. 15, at OTA, 414 N. Sequim Ave.
Directed by Ellyn Butchart, “Calendar Girls” is a play about coming-of-age at any age, OTA representatives said.
“It’s a charming, funny, ribald tale of the enduring power of sisterhood, friendship, and long-lived relationships,” they said. “It is also a story about ambition unrealized, the inevitability of loss, and the distinct possibility that we all grow better as we grow older.”
The show runs April 28-May 14.
