Sequim earned four event wins — including a thrilling win in the 4×400 relay — in a loss to Port Angeles last week, SHS’s first home meet of the season.

The Roughriders topped Sequim 108-61 on Sept. 25. It’s the closest match-up between the rivals since 2019, and an improvement for the Wolves after falling to the Riders 124-39 in 2023.

“We saw a few improved times for a few girls,” Sequim co-head coach Cherise Feser said. “It’s always a good rivalry with Port Angeles.”

Sequim’s Ava Shinkle won two individual events, first earning a district meet-qualifying time of 2:27.90 — about 20 seconds ahead of the field.

Sequim co-coach Sarah Thorson noted that Shinkle shaved two second off her time in the same event from a week prior and is just four seconds off a state meet-qualifying mark.

Shinkle added a win in the 100 butterfly in 10:07.57.

Sequim’s Annie Ellefson added a first place finish in the 100-breaststroke, taking the event by more than five seconds, in 1:09.92.

The Wolves’ 4×400 team of Shinkle, Ellefson, Keira Morey and Melia Nelson built a big lead and held off a charging Rider team by .45 of a second, in 4:31.66.

Nelson posted a strong second place finish in the 200 free (2:22.38), just .8 of a second behind PA’s Lynzee Reid.

Feser and Thorson also had a high praise for Kate Brouillard, who cut a minute off her personal best in the 500 freestyle for the 2023 season.

Coming up

The Wolves (1-1) are at North Kitsap (Poulsbo) on Oct. 2 and host Klahowya on Oct. 4.

Sequim hosts East Jefferson on Oct. 9 and Kingston on Oct. 16.
