Library programs are a great way to connect with your community, learn new skills and have fun — all for free thanks to generous donations from the Friends of Sequim Library.

Here are a few upcoming events you won’t want to miss.

Learn floral design skills with Sofie’s Florist on Thursday, Aug. 7, from 3-5 p.m. This program will be held at Olympic Theatre Arts Center, 414 N. Sequim Ave. Floral professionals will share tips and techniques for creating arrangements that highlight the beauty of late-summer flowers. Participants will have the chance to try their hand at foliage weaving, as well.

Celebrate the end of the Summer Reading Program with frozen treats and an all-ages hula hooping workshop. Hillia Hula will give an energetic hooping performance and attendees can learn beginner-friendly hoop moves. Hula hoops and popsicles will be provided on Thursday, Aug. 14, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the gym at Olympic Peninsula Academy, 400 N. Second Ave.

The Friday Night Movie series is held on the fourth Friday of each month at the Sequim Library Temporary Location, 609 W. Washington St.

On Friday, Aug. 22, at 6 p.m., enjoy the classic feel-good film “Field of Dreams,” starring Kevin Costner as Ray Kinsella who believes that if he builds a baseball diamond in his cornfield, Shoeless Joe Jackson from the infamous 1919 Chicago Black Sox will return to play baseball. By taking a chance, Ray gets a second time up at bat in life.

To help support Sequim Library programs like these, consider shopping at the monthly book sale hosted by the Friends of Sequim Library (FOSL). The next sale is Saturday, Aug. 9, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Rock Plaza, 10175 Old Olympic Hwy.

Shoppers will find a wide selection of books, DVDs, puzzles and music CDs. FOSL has generously donated $25,000 annually for many years to support Sequim Library programs. They accept donations of books, DVDs, CDs and puzzles that are in good condition on Mondays and Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

FOSL is currently searching for a new home for their monthly book sales. If you have any possible leads, please reach out to the organization.

You can also find the library at events happening around town. Visit the NOLS Bookmobile at Unity of Effort on Aug. 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 250 Center Park Way.

This event is hosted by Security Services Northwest and is an annual community celebration to honor and recognize first responders, law enforcement, emergency medical services and security personnel. Stop by to check out the helicopters, along with local police departments and the Sheriff’s Office, Washington State Patrol, all branches of the military and the local Fire District.

To learn about other upcoming programs, visit NOLS.org/events, or pick up a flyer at the Sequim Library. We hope to see you at a free program soon. Everyone is welcome.

The Sequim Library Temporary Location is open Monday–Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library is always open at NOLS.org.
