The Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society invites the public to come to Rainshadow Hall at the Dungeness River Nature Center, 1943 W. Hendrickson Road, on Saturday, Sept. 6 to celebrate National Hummingbird Day and the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) designating the north Olympic Peninsula as a Community Wildlife Habitat.
The gathering will take place from 10 a.m. to noon. NWF representatives and community leaders will be in attendance. There is a suggested donation of $5.
Julie O’Donald, native plant expert and NWF community wildlife habitat steward, will return to the Backyard Birding classroom.
She will overview the elements that create enticing gardens benefiting pollinators, birds, and people. O’Donald will emphasize the best native plants for pollinators and hummingbirds and the design features that create and sustain bird habitat.
Beautiful photography of native plants will illustrate how to bring nature home to any size property. O’Donald’s own certified wildlife habitat garden contains over 200 species of native plants — successfully attracting birds, butterflies, and pollinators for more than 25 years. The garden habitat has been featured in publications that include Pacific Horticulture, The Butterfly Gardener, Bird Watching Magazine, and Sunset publications. Plant lists will be available.
Come early for a baked goodie and to secure a seat to this first session of the new Backyard Birding 2025-2026 series.
