Volleyball takes win against North Mason
In its first match-up last week, Sequim volleyball team had a battle on its hands against North Mason on Sept. 16, but the Wolves came together late to win 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 20-25, 25-15) over the Bulldogs.
“It was a battle back-and-forth, but in the fourth game, we played better,” said coach Jennie Webber Heilman. She said the Wolves did a good job serving.
“Our biggest issue is passing. We need to do better passing,” she said.
Rose Gibson led the team serving, going 18-for-19 with five aces.Kassi Monteo and Brianna Palenik each served 8-for-8, while Sophia Greenleaf served 9-for-10.
Setter Kenzie Berglund had 23 assists and newcomer Teagan Neathery served 5-for-5. Ashton Reichner led the team with nine digs. Kendra Dodson, Jordyn Julmist, Neathery and Palenik all had four kills each.
On Sept. 18, the Wolves (2-1, 3-2) fell in three sets at Bainbridge. Statistics were not available by press time. This week, they’re set to host Olympic on Tuesday, and travel to Port Angeles on Thursday.
Soccer blanks Bulldogs
Five Wolves found the back of the net and goalkeeper Lillian Anderson recorded the shutout as Sequim earned its first win of the season on Sept. 16.
“There’s been a lot of growth since our first game,” assistant coach Vianey Cardenas said. “The girls have been working hard in training to improve on the things we were missing in our pre-season match, and now it’s starting to really show on the field.”
Sasha Yada opened the scoring with an assist from Kiley Winter, followed by Kaiya Robinson finishing from an Olive Bridge assist.
Raimey Brewer added two goals, Ruby Moxley-Horgan scored with an assist from Brewer, and Lily Sparks converted a penalty kick to round out the 6–0 win.
“The midfield core — Brewer, Bridge and Moxley-Horgan — anchored the team throughout the game, providing energy and control in key moments,” Cardenas said.
“Goalkeeper Lillian Anderson made several sharp saves to maintain the shutout and has continued to be a standout presence in net, particularly after a strong performance last week against Kingston, she was working hard and keeping us in that game, but we just came up a little short.
”Lillian will be a great player to watch this season. I am extremely proud of how the defensive line has been playing, anchored by senior Hailey Wagner,” Cardenas said. “Our defensive line is extremely diverse, they can all play anywhere on the back line and hold it down for us.”
On Sept. 18, the Wolves challenged the defending Olympic League champ Spartans in a tight loss.
“We went toe-to-toe with one of the top programs in the state, and our players showed exactly who they are: resilient, relentless and absolutely fearless,” Cardenas said.
“We’ve known that Bainbridge is a powerhouse. They thrive in the wide channels, play fast, and punish teams that can’t keep up. But our team didn’t back down. We came in with a clear game plan, to cut off their wide play and disrupt their rhythm and the girls executed it with incredible discipline and heart. Going into halftime 0-0, holding them to just two shots, that’s not something many teams can say they’ve done against Bainbridge.”
The Spartans did score off an early corner kick, but Cardenas said Sequim was still up to the task.
“Our energy never dropped,” she said. Our girls were composed, gritty, and battling for every single ball. We stayed in it until the final whistle, and while the scoreline doesn’t show a win, our performance was exemplary of winners.
Cardenas said the team’s wingers; Winter, Sparks, Adalie Eastburn and Robinson “hustled and did well in shutting down their outside midfielders and really helped us defensively.”
“Freshman Brooklyn Schmidt really shined for us last night; she’s been a rock on the back line and didn’t shy away from the challenge of facing a highly skilled Bainbridge squad,” Cardenas said. “Her composure and toughness set the tone for us defensively.”
Sequim (1-2-0, 1-3-0) was set to host Olympic on Tuesday and travel to Port Angeles on Thursday.
