Waterbirds presentation
The Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society will host Bob Boekelheide, the organization’s bird count compiler, when it meets at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 11 at the Solana Clubhouse, 135 Solana Parkway in Sequim. The public is welcome to attend.
Boekelheide will speak on the topic “Waterbirds of Straits and Sounds.” He will focus on common waterbirds found in the Salish Sea and how to recognize them while kayaking.
Coastal habitats of the Salish Sea are renowned for their waterbirds, particularly those that dive underwater to pursue prey in the water column or from the bottom. Groups such as alcids, loons, grebes, cormorants, and diving ducks thrive here, particularly noticeable by boaters offshore. Other groups such as gulls and migratory shorebirds are equally well-represented.
The presentation will include why the birds are here, what habitats and foods they use, and how their populations are doing.
Grand Olympics Chorus Guest Night
