Prior to postseason tournaments, Sequim’s wrestling squad is set to compete at its last regular season meet on Jan. 28 in Belfair against North Kitsap and North Mason.

Last week, the Wolves traveled to Kitsap County for a series of matches including a dual meet against Olympic on Jan. 21 in Bremerton where four Sequim wrestlers won matches.

Carson Mead at 120 pounds won by pin in 2:52 over Cameron Simmons, and Ryan Spelker (132 pounds) won in a 5-0 decision over Colby Wolfe. Sequim’s Johnny Vilona at 138 pounds pinned Elijah Person in 1:09, and Riley Downs (144 pounds) pinned Owen Patheal in 5:04.

At the Keigen Langholff Memorial tournament on Jan. 24 in Silverdale, Carson Mead led the Wolves with a fourth place finish in the 120-pound bracket. He lost his opening round in a 9-7 decision, but won three in a row in the consolation bracket with a 16-10 decision, 13-3 major decision, and an 11-10 decision before losing the third place match 18-3 in a tech fall to Ezekiel Santoy of Davis High School.

Max Sivilli (215) made two pins in the consolation bracket in 2:47 and 1:57, and Jasper Flath (285) made a pin in 2:20, and won a second match by medical forfeit.

Other Wolves to win matches included Brandon Bair (106) with a 3-1 decision, Downs made a pin in 1:29, and Aiden Glenn (175) earned an 18-2 tech fall.

Both Spelker and Vilona forfeited matches due to injuries, according to the tournament scorecard. Vilona did win a match by tech fall 21-5 earlier in the tournament.

Boys win in Belfair

Sequim came away with the win on Jan. 20 in Belfair by using a strong fourth quarter defensive performance in a 59-49 road win over North Mason.

“Solomon (Sheppard) played great defense, especially in the fourth quarter,” said Sequim coach Craig Brooks. “Mason [Rapelje] scored the ball well (21 points). Zeke [Schmadeke] and Hunter [Tennell] rebounded incredibly hard, and Andy Reynolds was two free throws away from his third double-double in a row.

“North Mason played tough. Their defense turned us over, and every time we got a lead, they fought back. It was back-and-fourth all game,” Brooks said.

In Bainbridge last Friday, the Wolves kept Bainbridge’s star player Ryan Rohrbacher to just three points, but they couldn’t take advantage and fell on the road 55-42.

Brooks said Rapelje scored the ball well (14 points with nine in the fourth quarter) and Schmadeke played great defense with his big assignment to contain Rohrbacher and keep the future University of Seattle player under wraps.

The Wolves had a 17-16 lead at the half, but the Spartans were able to take control of the game with a 19-9 third quarter.

This week, Sequim is set to play Olympic in a road game on Jan. 27 and host Port Angeles in a doubleheader following the girls game on Jan. 30. Next week, they’ll finish the regular season with a home game on Feb. 3 against North Kitsap and travel to Bremerton on Feb. 5 prior to the postseason.

Girls’ win streak ends at five

The Sequim girls basketball team won its fifth game in a row on Jan. 20 beating North Mason at home 56-38.

Gracie Chartraw led the Wolves with 35 points with seven 3-pointers, seven steals and five rebounds.

Coach Joclin Julmist said the Wolves struggled with foul trouble, including four players with four fouls, and that they need to continue getting better at all phases of the game, including rebounding.

Jordyn Julmist had eight points and 10 rebounds and Kaiya Robinson had seven points.

Sequim’s win streak was snapped by Bainbridge on Jan. 23 who pulled away in the fourth quarter for the 48-39 win.

Joclin Julmist said the Wolves were close until the last three minutes. The teams went into the fourth with Bainbridge hanging on to a 31-30 lead, but with the Spartans up 36-33 in the fourth, Bainbridge hit back-to-back 3-pointers to open up the lead to 42-33. They ended up outscoring the Wolves 17-9 in the fourth.

Joclin Julmist said the Wolves worked hard but the Spartans grabbed 17 offensive rebounds and Sequim committed 14 turnovers.

Chartraw led the Wolves with 25 points, while Jordyn Julmist had nine points and five rebounds and Hailey Wagner led the team with eight rebounds.

As of last week, Sequim is third place in the Olympic League. The Wolves were set to host Olympic on Tuesday, and Port Angeles on Friday. They’ll finish the regular season next week traveling to play North Kitsap on Feb. 3, hosting Bremerton on Feb. 5, and traveling to Neah Bay on Feb. 6.
