In its first year as a program, Sequim’s girls flag football squad is heading to the state 1A/2A tournament.

The Wolves finished their regular season at home on Jan. 28 with a 12-2 record to be named Olympic League co-champions with Klahowya.

“The girls are super excited about it,” Head coach Kathleen Rose said about the title and state berth.

“We had no idea what the season was going to look like for us.”

Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) sanctioned the sport in August, and Sequim School Board directors approved the team weeks before practices were set to begin.

Rose said the girls set the goals midseason to earn the league championship and make it to state as postseason schedules were starting to be announced.

“That was the push for everyone (on Sequim),” she said.

At the state quarterfinals, the Wolves will play Squalicum (10-6 overall), the number three seed, at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7 in Ferndale.

Port Angeles, the number four seed, plays Kingston, the number five seed, the same day at Peninsula College. State semifinals will go on Feb. 13 and the finals on Feb. 14, again in Federal Way.

“It’s gonna be tough, but I think it’s a really good place to be (in the bracket),” Rose said.

District play

Sequim played its district games on Jan. 30-31 at Olympic High School and needed just one win to earn a state berth.

They opened with a 14-7 win over Washington High School.

Kiley Winter scored both of Sequim’s touchdowns and an inadvertent whistle called back a third, Rose said.

In their next two games, the Wolves fell 37-7 to Kingston, and then 28-7 to Port Angeles.

Rose said the Wolves came out a little slow against the Buccaneers and were never able to find their groove.

Olivia Jameson had Sequim’s lone points with a pick-six interception run for a touchdown.

Against Port Angeles, Rose said she felt players came out strong in the beginning, but the Roughriders just outplayed them.

Sydney Thomas-Harris had a touchdown throw to Lily Sparks, and Winter had three sacks in the game.

Regular season finale

In their final double header of the season, Sequim won 41-11 over Bremerton and lost a tight game in the final minutes 28-21 to Bainbridge.

Ruby Moxley-Horgan opened the scoring frenzy against Bremerton with a rushing touchdown the length of the field. On their next drive, Raimey Brewer passed to Moxley-Horgan for another score, followed by Winter running in a touchdown.

Sparks threw to Jameson to put them up 28-0 with a two point conversion catch by Winter.

Moxley-Horgan snagged an interception, but the Knights got on the board with a safety after the Wolves dropped a lateral in the end zone.

However, Winter rushed in another touchdown, and Thomas-Harris threw a two point conversion to Winter. Thomas-Harris later threw a touchdown to Moxley-Horgan.

Towards the end of the game, Sequim recorded a sack, Bremerton scored a touchdown and recorded another safety.

Against the Spartans, Brewer opened the game with an interception followed by a Winter rushing touchdown to go up to 7-0. The Spartans responded with two scores to go up 14-7.

The Wolves tied it again with a passing touchdown from Sparks to Winter. Moxley-Horgan made an interception but Sequim couldn’t capitalize, leading to another Spartans touchdown.

Thomas-Harris then threw a touchdown to Brewer to tie the game, but the Spartans scored in the final minutes. The Wolves, with seconds left, tried to even the game but couldn’t pull down some deep passes to tie.

Following the loss, Sequim’s only other loss of the season came against Klahowya 35-6 on Dec. 11. The Wolves rebounded well to defeat the Eagles 28-14 the following week.
