A slice of fire prevention

Domino’s, FD3 partner for Fire Prevention Week event

A quick check of smoke alarms led to free pizza for a few Sequim households in recognition of Fire Prevention Week Oct. 5-11.

For two hours on Wednesday, Oct. 8, Clallam County Fire District 3 sent career and volunteer firefighters/EMTs and Sparky the Fire Dog with Sequim Domino’s delivery drivers to homes where homeowners gave the okay for firefighters to check their smoke alarms.

If the alarms worked, then customers would receive their order for free. If alarms didn’t work, then staff would replace batteries or install new smoke alarms for free donated by Domino’s, Ace Hardware, and the fire district’s Volunteer Association.

Of the homes visited, all had functioning smoke alarms, said Battalion Chief Chris Turner.

“We appreciate Domino’s and (owner) Aman (Singh) promoting Fire Prevention Week,” Turner said.

“It’s so important for our community, and we hope to do it again next year.”

Volunteer EMT Brandan Tucker read about the event in other areas, and applied with Domino’s to have Fire District 3 participate.

Singh, owner of Sequim and Port Angeles’ Domino’s stores since 2020, said he was excited to support the effort, and that even if customers declined to participate, it gets them to think about checking their smoke alarms.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) partners with Domino’s stores across the U.S., including Washington, for Fire Prevention Week.

NFPA suggests the following for home smoke alarms:

Install smoke alarms on each level of the home, including basements, each bedroom, and outside each separate sleeping area.

Test smoke alarms monthly by pushing the “test” button.

Replace smoke alarms after 10 years or when they no longer work properly.
