Sequim alumni compete with fall collegiate teams

Sequim’s prep athletes and weekend warriors aren’t the only athletes on the sporting stage.

A number of collegiates hailing from Sequim are competing at various division levels, from Cheney and Seattle to Palo Alto, Calif., and Montana.

Christina Bruce

_ Cross country, University of Great Falls

Bruce, a 2009 graduate of

Sequim High School, finished fourth in her varsity’s top five and was 28th out of 74 runners at the Yellow Jacket Invitational in Billings, Mont., on Oct. 10. Bruce’s Great Falls women’s team took third out of eight teams.

Bruce went on to run a personal best collegiate time at Lewis & Clark State College Invitational in Lewiston, Idaho, on Oct. 24. She then placed 20th overall at the Frontier Conference Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Nov. 8, helping her team place second out of five teams, just behind Lewis-Clark State College. Bruce finished the 5,000-meter race in 22:06.

Stephanie Marcy

_ Cross country, Stanford University

Marcy, a 2007 graduate of

Sequim High School, helped the Stanford Cardinal take 16th place at the 2009 NCAA Division I cross country championships on Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Ind.

Marcy, a red-shirt sophomore, was the top Cardinal runner with a 20:57 finish for 6,000 meters, good

for 53rd overall.

She also helped the Cardinal

win the Stanford Invitational on Sept. 26, finishing ninth overall with a 20:53 mark in the 6K race.

Laura Moser

_ Cross country, Seattle Pacific University

Moser, a 2009 graduate of

Sequim High and freshman at Seattle Pacific, took 65th overall at the Great Northwest Athletic conference cross country championships in Yakima on Oct. 24, help-

ing her Falcons place second out of nine teams, just behind Alaska-Anchorage.

Her teammate senior Jessica Pixler won the NCAA Division II cross country title on Nov. 21 in Evansville, Ind.

Moser was one of a number of young runners to help the Falcons take third place at the Pete Steilberg Classic at The Evergreen State College in Olympia on Sept. 26.

Moser led the Falcons with a 19th-place finish on the 5K course at Evergreen State, finishing with a 21:32 mark.

A week later, Moser was 23rd overall as the Falcons took third place again on Oct. 3 at the Emerald City Invitational in Seattle.

Alex Smyth

_ Cross country, Eastern Washington University

Smyth, a 2006 graduate of

Sequim High School, joined teammate Kyle King in finishing the 2009 season with top-25 placings

at the Big Sky Conference Championships in Greeley, Colo., on Oct. 31.

Smyth finished the 8,000-meter course with a time of 26:58, good for 23rd.

Eastern’s men finished fifth in the team standings.

Smyth skipped Eastern’s final two regular season meets to nurse a strained muscle. The SHS grad battled injuries all year.

Justine Textor

_ Tennis, University of Idaho

Textor, a 2007 graduate of

Sequim High School and junior at Idaho, tallied a pair of victories in the consolation round at the Cou-gar Classic in Pullman on Sept. 19.

Textor was 1-2 on Sept. 18 to slip into the Gray division, then rebounded with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Rocio Norena of Eastern Washington and topped Gabrielle Vespieren of Gonzaga, 6-4, 4-6,

10-2 the next day.
