Thanks To Fourth Friday Readings
Published 3:55 pm Monday, November 24, 2014
Writers on the Spit will celebrate another evening of readings the day after Thanksgiving, Nov. 28.
Featured writers Karen Hogan and Linda Myers will read at Rainshadow Coffee Bar, 157 W. Cedar St. in Sequim. The readings begin at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to arrive at 6 p.m. to select a favorite seat and a special-brewed coffee drink.
Hogan writes short stories, lyrical essays, poetry and narrative non-fiction. Arriving in Sequim in 2013, Hogan came from Livermore, Calif., where she hosted a literary salon for 10 years and published five anthologies of writings from that salon. She is working on a novel in short stories titled “Still Life.”
In addition to her passion for writing, Hogan acts, directs and produces theatrical events. In Livermore, she produced and directed “The Vagina Monologues” as well as the “Unusual Evenings” series which featured local writers and well-known authors like Anne Proulx and Kurt Vonnegut. In San Francisco, she directed the staged reading of “Gemini, or Jim and I–a Tale of Two Veras.” In Sequim, she directed two plays at OTA earlier this year and produced four First Friday events called “An Unusual Evening” in Sequim.
Myers moved to Port Angeles from Chicago in 2005. Her first non-fiction book, “The Great Lakes: North America’s Inland Sea,” was published by Outdoor World. “I learned how little an author could make,” she reports, so she turned to advertising and eventually became the creative director of Grey Advertising in Chicago.
Myers has four Kindle novels currently selling on Amazon with one of these soon to be published in Turkey. “You just never know who and where your audience might be,” she adds. Her titles include “Fun House Chronicles,” “Lessons of Evil,” “Bear in Mind” and “A Time of Secrets.” She is writing “Hard to Bear,” a second in the Bear Jacobs mystery series, and a fantasy trilogy titled “Cascadian Revels.”
Fourth Friday Readings include an hour of open-mike readings. Writers are encouraged to rehearse in advance as each writer is given five minutes to read. Sign in at the door. Names are drawn for the order of readings.
There is no fee for this event. Come early. Readings begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. and end at 8 p.m.. For open mike guidelines, contact at Rmarcus@olypen.com.
