A pair of Sequim High gymnasts are moving on to the districts competition after qualifying at the Olympic/Narrows sub-district qualifying meet Feb. 4 at Mount Rainer High School in Des Moines.

Sophomore Ennisa Albin and freshman Elizabeth Sweet, Sequim-area athletes who compete with Port Angeles High School during the regular season, will represent Sequim in individual events at the West Central District meet on Feb. 13, also at Mount Rainer High.

Sweet was third on the floor exercise (7.450), third on uneven bars (5.900), fourth on balance beam (5.950) and fourth on vault (6.850) among non-team qualifiers, each effort earning state bids.

Albin, who competed at the state meet in the balance beam last year, placed third in the beam (6.000 points) and fifth in uneven bars (5.600) at the district qualifier for her state berths.

Their Port Angeles teammates each advance to the state meet after the Roughriders took top team honors at the seven-team district qualifier with 152.55 points, with North Kitsap (131.425) in second. With just two competing athletes, Sequim placed sixth overall (44.100).

Mikka Yamane of Kingston was the top individual at the district qualifier, scoring 33.625 all-around points. Port Angeles’ Maya Wharton was second with 32.150 points and Cassandra Middlestead was third with 31.825 points. Sweet was 12th (21.650 points) and Albin was 22nd (17.950).

Top athletes at districts move on to the Washington state gymnastics championships, set for Feb. 19 in Tacoma.
