Sequim’s Shiso Visitors

Led by Sequim host Gail Sumpter and their chaperones, the Shiso exchange students began their day of visits to Sequim schools with a stroll down Fir Street on Monday morning, Sept. 23.

First stop: a tour of Judie Lawson’s first-grade class at Helen Haller.

The visit included a lengthy discussion of “home schooling” with Sumpter and Haller Principal Russ Lodge, a concept that was entirely novel to the Japanese educators. Kenji Nishigaki enjoyed a personal tour of first-grader Aeideon Greer’s classroom at Helen Haller.

During their stay, the Japanese contingent also enjoyed bowling, special dinners and visits to local sights. A group of ninth- and tenth-grade Sequim students soon will visit Shiso City, Sequim’s sister city in Japan.
