Football: Bucs notch first win against Wolves

Kingston made a little history Friday night — at Sequim’s expense.

The Buccaneers used a balanced attack to riddle Sequim’s defense for 464 yards from scrimmage and Buccaneer back Nick Tabanera had four touchdown scampers in a 47-28 Kingston win on Oct. 5.

It was the Bucs’ first win against Sequim since the series started in 2007.

"They were able to execute on offense," Sequim coach Erik Wiker said. "They were able to be effective at both (passing and rushing)."

Buc quarterback Bobby Reece was 12 of 21 for 196 yards and three touchdowns while Tabanera ran for 183 of Kingston’s 268 rushing yards.

Sequim quarterback Jack Wiker kept Sequim close for much of the contest with his legs, rushing for 152 yards and four touchdowns, including a pair of fourth-quarter scores that drew the Wolves within two touchdowns each time.

But each time, Kingston had an answer, whether it was a long Tabanera scoring run or a defensive stop.

With the Wolves’ hopes for a league title already extinguished, Sequim saw its hopes for winning league record dashed Friday night as well.

It’s the first time Sequim won’t be first first or second in the league standings since 2003.

"There are a lot of teams that want to beat us," Erik Wiker said. "It’s hard being on top. Hopefully it’s a wake-up call."

The Wolves’ night ended on a sour note as sophomore running back Brady Vig was injured on the game’s final play; he was examined by medical staffers for a neck injury and taken from the field on a stretcher.

Sequim gets a bit of home cooking again as it hosts Klahowya’s Eagles on Oct. 12.

Klahowya (2-2 in league play, 4-2 overall) is coming off a 15-14 nail-biter home win against Olympic.
