Wolves cap best season at state

The alleys are quiet now, but Sequim bowlers can lay claim to one of their best seasons on record.

A trio of Wolves capped the 2009-2010 season at the state 2A/3A tournament in Tacoma on Feb. 6, with Samantha Whiteside leading the way. The senior finished 31st overall with a six-game series of 881 pins, with a 170 pins her top single-game finish.

Whiteside’s was the best finish by a Sequim bowler at state in school history.

Teammate Kim Duce, a junior, was 37th overall with 860 pins and a team-best 176-pin, single-game score.

Senior Alex Whiteside was 52nd overall at state for the second consecutive season, finishing with a 631-pin series and 122-pin best game.

Mark Morris of Longview won the team 2A/3A title, edging Olympic – a familiar foe of Sequim’s – by just 82 pins.

Klahowya, another

Sequim rival from the Olympic League, was seventh.

"They all had a good time, good attitudes toward everything," Sequim coach Randy Perry said of his Wolves.

Carys Bailey of Klahowya won the individual 2A/3A state title with 1,143 pins in six games, edging Katryn Comeau of Prairie by 47 pins.

The Wolves finished with a 6-9 season mark, while Duce set school records for individual game (221 pins) and series (359). The Wolves set school marks for team game (845), Baker-format game (186) and total match pins (1,774).

Perry said the Wolves will miss its soon-to-graduate seniors and, in particular, exchange student Lola Macia, who filled in for a missing starter and helped the team members bond.

"She just kind of came out of nowhere," Perry said. "We’re going to miss her a lot."

With a slew of seniors headed to graduation, Perry and the Wolves look to Duce, fellow senior-to-be Sage Brown and others to bolster the 2010-2011 roll.
