In the midst of the middle school basketball season, Sequim’s own boys’ seventh-grade hoopsters took an extended holiday – by playing a little basketball.

Sequim’s Wolves select squad went 3-1 in the Martin Luther King Basketball Tournament in Port Angeles on Jan. 16-17, winning their final three games.

Despite having the second-best record in the tourney, Sequim placed fifth overall in the boys’ seventh-grade division, thanks to an opening-round, 49-32 loss to Perry of Bremerton.

The nine-player Wolves squad rebounded with a 59-50 win versus Lake Stevens Gold. The Wolves and Lake Stevens Gold were rematched in the next round, with Sequim coming out on top again, 55-42. In the fifth-/sixth-place game, Sequim topped the Lake Stevens Purple team 59-49.

"(The) kids played hard and everyone contributed," coach Michael Barry said. "They were excited to be in the tournament."
