The Sequim/Port Angeles-based Storm King Soccer Club saw their U-11 and U-13 select soccer teams play in the annual SeaTac Cup, Aug. 20-22 at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila.
This year’s prestigious tournament brought in 89 teams from the Pacific Northwest.
In U-11 action, the Storm King team lost in the semi-finals, 1-0 in a hard-fought match against Blackhills FC, to finish third in the division. The team formed just three months prior and is led by coach Kevin Parker.
The U-13 Storm King team, a more veteran squad with most members having played together for two or three years, went undefeated in pool play and beat a previously unbeaten, unscored-upon Blackhills FC of Olympia, to earn the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.
In the semifinals, they battled the host team, HPFC, to a 3-3 tie in regulation. At the end of two, 10-minute overtime periods, the score again was tied, 5-5. Storm King prevailed 3-2 in a penalty shootout, with the goalie Austin Wagner making a couple of spectacular saves and Hayden James winning it on the final shot.
In the championship game, the weary Storm King team fell 2-0 to Blackhills FC.
