SHS sophomore wins film fest poster contest

Not bad for a first-timer.

Sophomore Breyanna Taylor is the winner of the 2015 Sequim Education Foundation Student Film Festival poster contest and a $100 cash prize.

Though it’s first time that Taylor has entered a contest to showcase her work, her love of drawing began when she was 4 or 5 years old, watching her older sister draw.

“After seeing what she could do, I wondered if I could be as good as she is,” Taylor said.

Taylor’s submittal beat out 48 other entries.

“It was an extremely tough pick for the judges because they were blown away by the artistic talent displayed in this year’s entries,” festival chairman Elna Kawal said.

The complexity mixed with the bright colors of Taylor’s wolf finally won the judges over, Kawal said.

Taylor is a student in Charles Kleinberg’s multimedia class.

“My inspiration for this drawing was from my favorite style of art called Zentangle,” she said. “I made the head out of little abstract designs and then used the film strips for the mane and used a wolf for the Sequim Wolves.”

Film festival is No. 10

This year’s event marks the 10th film festival. It kicks off at 7 p.m., Friday, April 17, at the Sequim High School auditorium, 533 N. Sequim Ave.

The competition is open to all Sequim School District students. Students must turn their films into the district office no later than 4 p.m. Monday, April 6.

Film Festival winners are awarded up to $6,750 in scholarship funds, plus cash prizes.

This year the Sequim Sunrise Rotary is sponsoring a $500 cash award to the film student or students who create a film documenting community service. The student film may be about their own volunteer work or other community individuals, organizations or clubs (either school or community organizations). Preference will be given for local service projects.

A cash prize also will be given for the best Public Service Announcement.

Trophies are given for best actor and actress, and the “peoples’ choice” Elkie Award will go to the winning video chosen by the audience.

A $5 donation is requested to help with the cost of the scholarships.
