Six area youths won first place in their respective age groups Jan. 8 at the 2011 Sequim Elks Hoop Shoot at the Boys & Girls Club in Sequim, qualifying for a district competition.
Forty-nine boys and girls in age groups 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13 competed in free throw contests.
Two competitors sank 20 of 25 free throw tries. Event director Kim Bower said this is one of the best groups Sequim has sent to the district competition.
The district hoop shoot is set for noon Thursday, Jan. 22, at the Sequim Boys & Girls Club, 400 W. Fir St. Registration starts at 11 a.m.
Competitors from Sequim, Bremerton, Port Angeles, Port Townsend, Aberdeen, Ocean Shores, Forks, Hoquiam and Shelton will participate. District winners move on to the Feb. 12 state competition in Bellevue. Second-place competitors serve as state alternates.
