Football: Wolves trounce Trojans in Silverdale, take over second place in Olympic League

Riley Cowan helped put the Wolves up early and teammate Gavin Velarde put the game away.

Sequim’s Wolves took a big step toward locking up the No. 2 Olympic League seed — and a home playoff game — with a 48-26 win at Olympic on Oct. 17, highlighted by Velarde’s five touchdowns.

Sequim, playing in Silverdale on Monday night after the Oct. 14 matchup was postponed due to threat of a winter storm, improved to 3-1 in league play and 5-2 overall. The Wolves now have a half-game advantage over Olympic’s Trojans (3-2, 4-3), with a home game against Port Angeles (Oct. 21) and away game at Kingston (Oct. 28) looming.

Cowan connected with Payton Glasser from nine yards out to open the scoring, and then found Kyler Rollness for a 50-yard TD pass later in the same quarter for a 13-0 Sequim lead.

Velarde scored on a pair of rushing touchdowns in the second quarter — one from six yards out, the other from a yard away, but the Trojans responded with scores as well.

With the Trojans driving deep into Sequim territory down 26-14, Velarde intercepted quarterback Evan Quitevis and raced 97 yards for a touchdown and 34-14 Sequim halftime lead.

Olympic, celebrating its Homecoming festivities, looked to mount a comeback in the third quarter when Quitevis found tight end Kolby Jones from six yards out, but Velarde returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown.

Velarde added a four-yard TD run in the fourth quarter for good measure.

Volleyball picks up a win

Despite seeing their match with visiting North Mason shifted from last Thursday to Oct. 17, Sequim’s Wolves put away the Bulldogs in straight sets, 3-0.

Sequim improved to 7-1 in Olympic League play and 9-1 overall heading into their match at league-leading North Kitsap (9-0, 10-1) on Oct. 18 — results were not available at press time.

The Wolves host rival Port Angeles on Oct. 20 and Kingston on Oct. 24. Sequim closes the regular season at Bremerton on Oct. 25 before playing in the league tourney, set for Oct. 27 and Oct. 29 in Port Angeles.
