Somewhere between the long road trips and practices at the bowling alley, these Wolves got some homework done.

It paid off.

Sequim’s girls bowling squad earned top academic honors among class 2A teams during the 2011-2012 season, with its six members combining for a 3.332 grade-point average.

Randy Perry, Sequim High School’s bowling coach since 2008, said his Wolves’ work ethic in the classroom comes naturally.

“They’ve already got it going on,” Perry said. “They’re great. They work on their homework on their rides to the matches. It’s pretty amazing (that) in the past four years pretty much every girl is on the honor roll.”

Team members include Mikayla Ahlin, Christin Egert, Karli Furgurson, Megan McAndie, Kelsey Van Dyken and Danyelle Wilson.

McAndie and Van Dyken also were named to the All-Olympic League academic team.

And there’s a good chance the Wolves will have a chance to repeat, with five of their six core bowlers potentially back for the 2012-2013 season.

“This (honor) shows you can do extracurriculars and keep up your grades, too,” Perry said.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association awards top academic honors to activities each fall, winter and spring to schools in 4A (largest) through 1B. In the winter, the association recognized top classroom performances in band, boys and girls basketball, bowling, cheer, choir, dance and drill, drama, forensics, gymnastics, orchestra, boys swimming and boys and girls wrestling.

Kingston’s gymnastics team was the only other Olympic League school earning an academic state title this winter.
