Explosive topic set for next Science Café

The Sequim Education Foundation is sending its 2013-2014 Science Café season out with a bang.
Dave Brasher, vice president of High Energy Metals, Inc., presents “Explosive Welding” on June 4.
Brasher has more than 25 years of experience in the design and manufacture of explosion bonded components. In 1997, he and Don Butler founded High Energy Metals, Inc. which specializes in explosive metalworking. The most common explosive metalworking technique is explosive welding, also known as explosive bonding or explosive cladding. This metalworking technique uses controlled detonations to force dissimilar metals into a high-quality, metallurgically bonded joint.
The transition joint has high mechanical strength, is ultra-high vacuum tight and can withstand drastic thermal excursions. Dissimilar metal explosion bonded joints are used in a wide variety of applications including the latest Mars Rover, Curiosity, medical X-ray imaging machines, high-energy particle accelerators and high-pressure liquid gas separation equipment.
The Science Café is a community service of Sequim Education Foundation. Programs present expert speakers for adult and young adult audiences interested in current developments in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Science Café events are held on the second Tuesday of the month at the Paradise Cafe. Admission is free and food and beverages are available for purchase.
