Soroptimist group offers funds for community groups
Soroptimist International of Sequim is a local volunteer organization working to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment. Each year Soroptimist International of Sequim chooses local organizations to receive a portion of the funds it earns through local fundraising efforts such as the Gala Garden Show and the Gala Gift Show.
If a local organization’s activities align with Soroptimist International of Sequim’s mission statement and would like to be considered as a recipient of the club’s 2017-2018 fiscal year committed funds, visit www.sisequim.org for an application. The application deadline is March 1.
Plant workshop planned
The Friends of the Trees Society presents a plant walk and workshop with naturalist Michael Pilarski focusing on the topic “Wildcrafting: How to Collect Wild Plants for Commercial and Home Use,” from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, March 5, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, Sequim. The cost is $30. Attendees are asked to bring a brown bag lunch and dress for the weather.
Kilmer to have town hall
Rep. Derek Kilmer has announced that he will be holding a series of town halls throughout the region. Town halls are open to the public and all are encouraged to attend. Participants will have the opportunity to hear an update on Congress and ask questions.
Kilmer will be at the Sequim High School auditorium, 503 N. Sequim Ave., from 5:30-7 p.m. Monday, March 6.
Genealogy class offered
The Clallam County Genealogical Society presents its free class “I Know Nothing About Genealogy” from 2-4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave. Reserve a seat at 417-5000.
Officer, banker to talk scams
The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild’s Speaker Series and business meeting will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, in the community hall of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave. in Sequim. Speakers always are first on the program and will feature this month Sean Madison of the Sequim Police Department and Sheena Youngren of First Federal. They will review retail crime scams, trends and prevention in Sequim. After their presentation, there will be a short recess followed by the regular business meeting. Garden club sets spring topics
The Sequim Prairie Garden Club meets at 10 a.m. the first Monday monthly at its clubhouse in Pioneer Memorial Park, 387 E. Washington St., Sequim. Upcoming programs are March 6, “Helping our feathered friends”; April 3, “Color for Spring &Summer”; and May 1, “Native Plants of the North Olympic Peninsula.” All presentations are free and open to the public. Irrigation district to meet
The Highland Irrigation District will now meet at 7 p.m. the first Tuesday monthly at Adagio Bean &Leaf, 481 E. Washington St., Sequim. The next meeting will be March 7.
Native trees, shrubs for sale
Clallam Conservation District is selling native trees and shrubs from 9:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, Feb. 25, at Lazy J Tree Farm, 225 Gehrke Road, Port Angeles.
Conifer trees remaining include Douglas-fir, grand fir, shore pine, Sitka spruce, western hemlock and western red cedar; deciduous trees include big leaf maple, Pacific crabapple, red alder, Rocky Mountain maple and vine maple; deciduous shrubs include blue elderberry, Indian plum, mock orange, Nootka rose, oceanspray, Pacific ninebark, red elderberry, red flowering currant, red osier dogwood, serviceberry, snowberry, thimbleberry and twinberry
. Bare-root tree and shrub seedlings are sold in bundles of 10 and 25 and range in price from $15-$25 per bundle.
Woodworkers to gather
The next meeting of the Strait Turners will be from 9:30 a.m.-noon Tuesday, Feb. 28, at the Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road, Gardiner. Tom Riette, a board member and webmaster, will offer an “Introduction to Segmented Turning” and demonstrate sharpening on his Tormek Sharpening System. Turners of all levels are welcome. Learn about life under Communism
Ever wonder what it would be like to grow up in a Communist country? Maria Malkasian, a native of Romania, will be the speaker at the Republican Women of Clallam County meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, in the conference room of First Federal, 1201 W. Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St., on Tuesdays-Fridays.
Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed.

Homeschooling seminar set
There will be a free Introduction to Homeschooling Seminar from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, in the Carver Room South at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.
Whether you are thinking about homeschooling or are currently homeschooling and have questions, all are welcome. This informative seminar, open to the public, will address: how to qualify to homeschool, declaration of intent, 11 required subjects and how to cover them, annual testing and record keeping, as well as homeschooling for high school.
