On Saturday, July 22, Clallam County Master Gardeners Bob Cain and Bev Morrow, and coordinator Lorrie Hamilton will share how to successfully grow a vegetable or ornamental garden in a limited growing space. The talk will be held at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden, 2711 Woodcock Road, Sequim, from 9-11:30 a.m.

The workshop will be separated into several sections. The first will concentrate on container gardening for patios, decks or other small spaces. Attendees will rotate through stations designed to give them a better understanding of how to successfully grow a variety of plants in containers.

The next piece will focus on vertical gardening. Morrow will discuss methods of training plants to grow upward. She also will highlight vertical growing containers that help to save space in the garden.

Cain will then give a presentation on square foot gardening, a method of intensely growing a variety of vegetables in a grid system. He will follow his talk with a demonstration on pruning fruit trees as espaliers. This two-dimensional training system allows homeowners with a small garden to still enjoy the bounty from an orchard.

The workshop will conclude with a question/answer section where attendees can talk one-on-one with Master Gardeners to create their small space garden and to gain advice on their specific garden challenges.

The workshop is free, but donations for printing costs would be appreciated. No pre-registration is needed.

This presentation is part of the “Saturday in the Garden” lecture series at the Master Gardener Demonstration Garden. To find the complete listing of lectures throughout the summer months, visit http://extension.wsu.edu/clallam/. For questions, call 565-2679.
