Annual Cranksgiving event deemed a success

Some community outreach events are measured in turnout, some by dollars raised … and others, by the pound.

Despite fewer riders than 2016, Sequim’s 2017 Cranksgiving event nearly doubled the weight of food raised last year, with more than a ton (2,347 pounds) coming in along with $338, all going to the Sequim Food Bank.

Last year’s event saw 54 riders bring in 1,389 pounds of food.

At the 2017 event, three teams and 18 individuals competed. The winning team was Ride the OP led by Randy Barber and including Ken Stringer, Deb Turner, Henry Lingan and Don Penfield, who collectively and gathered 934 pounds of food.

The second place team, the Bike-O-Crats from the City of Sequim, were led by Ann Soule and included Sheri Crain, Charlie Bush, Dave Shreffler and Nancy Kohn; they gathered 442 pounds of food. The third place team, the Silverbacks, were led by Bob Anundson and included Garland Frankfurth, John Dolansky, Sue Ab and Joe Cress. They brought in 75 pounds of food.

Stringer broke all known records by gathering 477 pounds on his own, collecting food with his team and completing extra run after the team competition concluded. He received the “Big Kahuna“ award for most food gathered by an individual.

Other award winners included:
