Random Questions: Ryan and Sarah McCarthey

It’s been 2 1/2 years since Ryan and Sarah McCarthey took over the Dungeness Valley Creamery, 1915 Towne Road, from Sarah’s parents. Their business remains steadfast supplying certified raw Jersey cow milk to 30 retail stores and 30 drop points of 10 to 120 gallons.

They’ve recently partnered with Viking Feast Ice Cream of Poulsbo to make ice cream with their cow’s milk. Total, the creamery’s staff milks about 60 Jersey cows and host about 140 animals total on the farm.

Visitors can go to the farm 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday, but they are also opening up for the North Olympic Land Trust’s farm tour Oct. 4 with hayrides and demonstrations such as butter making.

Sarah said people are welcome to do self-guided tours during business hours and they are expecting new calves soon.

Question 15: Where have you lived?

Sarah: I lived in Everson until I moved with my parents (Jeff and Debbie Brown) at age 6 to Sequim. I got my AA at Peninsula College and finished my junior and senior years in Pullman at Washington State University and I’ve been back in Sequim ever since.

Ryan: I lived in Port Ludlow for 18 years, and I went to college in Ellensberg for Central Washington University. I was with the Army reserves and I was in Iraq for a year and now I’m in Sequim.

Question 14: Who is one person you’d like to take to dinner (other than each other)?

Sarah: Pastor Dave (Wiitala from Sequim Bible Church). I like to pick his brain. He always has interesting insight.

Ryan: I like going with my dad (Dennis). I learn a lot from him and our relationship continues to grow.

Question 34: In one word, how would you describe yourself?

Sarah: Complex.

Ryan: Energetic.

Bonus Question 1: How would you describe your partner in one word?

Sarah: Ryan is passionate about life in general. Everything he does, he does with passion.

Ryan: Sarah is compassionate to others and is always very thoughtful.

Question 42: What is your best/first memory of Sequim?

Sarah: When we lived in Everson, we would visit Fred and Katie Schmuck who had Maple View Farm. My dad got close with Fred and we’d stay in town with them where Adagio is now. They had a cool rec room with ping pong and a room full of games.

Ryan: My best memory was our first date when we went on a motorcycle ride. We went berry picking across the river and got to see the pretty outskirts. We went to Voice of America Park and Port Williams Boat Launch.

Bonus Question 2: If you were stuck in the same day over and over, what would you do?

Sarah: I’d want to go on a horseback ride and go back packing in the mountains.

Ryan: I’d want to spend time off the farm with the kids. It’s fun to get away and spend time with them.
