Redskins splash Wolves

For once, Sequim faced a team with fewer swimmers than their own crew.

It didn’t seem to matter for Port Townsend, whose Redskins took first place in nine of 11 events to top Sequim 91-69 in Olympic League action on Sept. 30 in Port Townsend.

Sequim’s two took home first place swims – Rachel Hardy in the 50 free and Gianna Vennetti in the 100 butterfly.

Sequim boasts 13 swimmers to Port Townsend’s eight.

"First-year jitters and an unfamiliar pool contributed to Sequim’s problems," Sequim assistant coach Chuck Lamb said.

The Wolves did see strong improvements in swims, particularly from first-year competitors Hannah Earley, Havilah Gautshi, Sabrina Marunde and Kendra Richardson.

Both of Port Townsend’s 200 medley relay squads posted district-qualifying times while getting first-place swims from Darby Decively (200 free), Averi Richert (200 IM, 100 breaststroke), Renalda Walcome (100 free), Darby Flanagan (500 free), Mazy Braden (100 back), the 200 free relay and 400 free relay teams. The Redskins had 11 district-qualifying swims in the meet.

"I expected Sequim to take the 200 medley relay, the 100 free and the 200 free relay and they worked really hard on the relay transitions," Port Townsend coach Anji Scalf said.

The Wolves host rival Port Angeles, 3A powerhouse Bainbridge on Oct. 12 and Poulsbo’s North Kitsap Vikings on Oct. 14 to wrap up the regular season.
