Despite a five-inning loss to league power North Kitsap, Sequim coaches and players found plenty of good things coming out of their third league loss of the season against North Kitsap on March 23.
On the strength of a 16-hit attack, North Kitsap routed Sequim 15-2 last week to stay atop the Olympic League standings.
The Wolves, meanwhile, managed just three hits and two runs — both scored by Kyler Rollness — off of NK starter Kaden Storm and Ryland Schmidt.
“That’s the cleanest game we’ve played (yet),” Sequim coach Dave Ditlefsen said. “They just crushed the ball.”
Isaac Richardson had three hits for the Vikings and five others had two hits apiece.
Rollness and Ryan Clark each had doubles for Sequim while Ian Miller had the other base hit. Rollness also had a steal.
Earlier in the week, Sequim couldn’t muster a rally while host North Mason got a big inning off Miller, SHS’s ace, as the Bulldogs topped Sequim 6-1 in Belfair on March 20.
North Mason senior Noah Wiseman was 2-for-3 with a double, home run and two RBIs, and teammate Ryan McGanney had a double and two RBIs as North Mason plated four runs in the fourth inning.
Miller and Michael Young had two hits apiece for Sequim. Joey Oliver and Johnnie Young added base hits for Sequim.
Miller gave up six hits and two walks over four innings, striking out three. Oliver tossed two scoreless innings of relief, giving up just one hit.
“I’m very happy with where we’re headed right now — it’s more about the process than the results,” Ditlefsen said.
A March 24 home date versus Mount Tahoma was postponed because of poor weather.
Looking ahead
Sequim (0-3 in league play, 3-4 overall) gets a rare night game when they take on rival Port Angeles at Civic Field on March 28; game time is 6 p.m.
The Wolves are at Kingston on March 30, their final game before spring break. They are back in action April 11 when they host Bremerton.
