Soroptimist honors Sequim students

Soroptimist International of Sequim recently honored and congratulated two young women as September and October Girls of the Month. The high school senior girls, both co-captains of their basketball team, along with some members of their families, were guests at the club’s Oct. 14 business meeting.

September’s Soroptimist Girl of the Month is Elise Beuke (above, right), daughter of Mary Beth Beuke and Todd Beuke. Aside from challenging herself in AP classes at the high school, being involved in student government and participating in girls basketball, Beuke also volunteers through the Sequim Youth Basketball program as a coach, referee and clinic leader. The extracurricular activity she’s most passionate about, however, is rowing. A rower with the Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association in Port Angeles, Beuke plans on rowing for the University of Washington next year.

October’s Soroptimist Girl of the Month is Victoria Cummins, daughter of Karin Cummins. Cummins is a second-year Running Start student, simultaneously earning high school and college credit. She looks forward to receiving an Associate of Arts degree from Peninsula College next spring. She is a member of the National Honor Society, plays girls basketball for Sequim High School and also volunteers for the Sequim Youth Basketball program as a coach for third- and fourth-grade girls. Her future plans include transferring to a four-year university in the fall of 2015.
