93 Days of Summer

The Olympic Peninsula has plenty going on for our 93 days of summer. Check out this week’s staff picks and look for more each Wednesday, along with video highlights of this summer’s festivities on the Gazette’s Facebook page.
• Aug. 9
It’s your patriotic duty to check out the Northwest Colonial Festival, set for Aug. 9-12 at George Washington Inn, 939 Finn Hall Road, Port Angeles. The event features a colonial village and daily reenactments of the Battles of Lexington and Concord. Hours are 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. At the event, weekend tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and military, $5 for youths aged 12-17, $1 for ages 3-11 and 2 and younger are free. • Aug. 10
Check out a drive-in movie on the peninsula! The Wheel in Motor-in movie (www.ptwheelinmotormovie.com) is open Wednesdays-Sundays. Admission is $9 for adults, $7 for seniors (65+) and juniors (12 and younger); youths under 6 are free.
• Aug. 11
There are plenty of music opportunities this summer, including the popular Olympic Cellars Concerts Summer Concert Series (www.olympiccellars.com/summer-concert-series) that sees a portion of proceeds go to local charities. On Aug. 11, the 2018 West Coast Women’s Blues Revue comes to town, supporting the Sequim Food Bank.
• Aug. 12
Help support local nonprofits at the 50th Sequim Rotary Salmon Bake at the Sequim Boys & Girls Club. From noon-4 p.m., enjoy music, raffles and, of course, wild salmon cooked over an alder fire as Rotarians celebrate their 50th year of service. Tickets are $16 ($18 day-of) for adults, $5 for children’s hot dog meals. Proceeds benefit Sequim youth programs, the Boys and Girls Club and other charities. (www.sequimrotary.org, 360-683-8981)
• Aug. 13
Let marine science blow your mind at the Feiro Marine Life Center in Port Angeles. The center showcases sea stars, crabs, scallops, anemones, fish and a giant Pacific octopus. Get a hands-on view at the microscope station and check out some of the area’s natural history through displays of whale bones and shells, sculptures and murals and three touch tanks. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $3 for youths of ages 3-17 and free for the youngest ones. Summer hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m., seven days a week. (feiromarinelifecenter.org, 360-417-6254)
• Aug. 14
Go international with a trek to Victoria, B.C., for the day. Visit the Royal British Columbia Museum (www.royalbcmuseum.bc.ca) and catch an IMAX movie (imaxvictoria.com) while you’re there, or explore the downtown shopping and waterfront. The MV Coho sails four times daily through Sept. 5; one-way fares are $18.50 for adults, $9.25 for children 5-11, free for 4-year-olds and younger. (www.cohoferry.com, 360-457-4491)
• Aug. 15
Check out Forks’ Logging & Mill Tour, hosted through the summer by the Forks Chamber of Commerce. This free tour (donations accepted) held Wednesdays through Sept. 5 explores Forks’ mills where participants learn about modern forest practices, policies that affect our forests and the global impacts of good forest management. Tours start at 8:45 a.m. at the Forks Visitor Information Center. Make sure to wear boots or sneakers; no youths under age 8 are allowed. (www.forks.wa, tourism@forkswa.com, 360-374-2531)
