Local 4-H youths showed off their shooting skills recently, bringing home three division championships and six medals from the Washington State Shooting Sports Tournament in Eatonville on May 19-20.
Thirteen participating youths from Clallam County were able to exhibit their skills learned during the year-round 4-H Shooting Sports program and compete within their age division with youths from across the state.
Clallam’s riflery team secured three division champions and six of a possible 12 medals in the air rifle competition.
Sequim’s own Gavin Eisenbeisz took Senior Division State Champion and fellow Sequim youth Bailey Geniesse took the Intermediate Division State Champion. Teammate Joseph Maggard was named Junior Division State Champion. Others taking home medals were Levi Bergren of Sequim (third place, Senior Division), Caleb Mathison (fourth place, Senior Division) and Cheyenne Maggard (fourth place, Intermediate Division).
Sequim’s Phillip Powers placed eighth in the Intermediate Division-Recurve archery competition. Teammates Bethany Barber and Carley Rifer placed sixth and seventh, respectively in the Senior Division-Compound archery division.
The Washington State University Extension 4-H Shooting Sports Program provides instruction in the safe handling of firearms and archery equipment, develops responsibility, ethical decision-making and leadership skills in 4-H participants, program organizers say.
