The future of Sequim tennis is here and now.

In just two days, 27 youths — most of the from Sequim — took to the Sequim High School courts for the Sequim Juniors Tennis Tournament, July 25-26. With some playing in multiple divisions, the tourney saw 40 entires and 42 total matches.

Conforming to US Tennis Association specifications for Ten-And-Under-Tennis, special courts and balls were used for those matches for the younger players, while youths in the 8U division played on a 36-foot court using a lower net, and those in the 10U division played on a specially-rigged 60-foot court. They also used a point scoring system. All other participants played eight-game sets, using normal scoring.

Standouts in the tournament were Emma Shogren, Kalli Wiker and Olivia Preston — all just entering the eighth grade — as they dominated the 14 and 16-and-under divisions.

Others who played with distinction included Isabelle Hugoniot in the 18U division, Raymond Lam in the 16U division, Paul Jacobson in the 14U division, Reef Gelder in the 12U division, and Garrett Little, Julia Jeffers, Joshua Alcaraz and Crystal Rieckoff in the 10U and 8U divisions.

“The future of local tennis lies within the youth of our community,” tourney organizer Don Thomas said.
