Brandan Tucker, lead emergency room technician at Olympic Medical Center, received the inaugural BEE (Being Excellent Every Day) Award, the organization announced last week.

The award, established by OMC and a companion to the DAISY Award given to nursing staff, recognizes non-nurse staff members, both clinical and non-clinical, who exceed expectation in service excellence every day.

Tucker was recognized for his work in the emergency room, where he provides care in the emergency department for patients in what is for many, a time filled with anxiety and uncertainty.

According to Emergency Services Clinical Supervisor Cheri Levi, Tucker is more than deserving of this award.

“Brandan is an amazing tech, and every member of the ED team has benefited from his expertise and knowledge at one time or another,” she said. “He always shows up to work in a good mood, bringing kindness and gentleness to each patient.”

“As the leadoff award for ancillary and support staff working side-by-side with nurses, this ceremony had special meaning to all of us at OMC,” said Jennifer Burkhardt, OMC’s Chief Human Resources Office and General Counsel. “It recognized the importance of teamwork in delivering excellent health care for our patients and community.

“As health care workers, we rely on and appreciate our teammates, and this award will enhance our legacy of recognizing outstanding service and teamwork by establishing a companion award for our existing nurse recognition program. The energy, support and pride in the room as we recognized our first recipient, Brandan Tucker, was tangible.”

A colleague nominated Tucker for the BEE award, writing: “Brandan is such an incredible ERT in our emergency department. He truly demonstrates the BEE Award values each and every day. Brandan regularly and consistently goes out of his way to help his patients as well as his peers in the department. His expertise and knowledge truly set him apart. He shows his versatility each day by working in a variety of environments, able to pivot seamlessly between roles with a positive attitude. Finally, Brandan is very supportive of patients in their time of need. His soft-spoken nature provides a calming presence to his patients. He takes time to listen and doesn’t just rush on to the next task. He also shows empathy towards other staff who may be having a hard day. He brings a great sense of joy and humor that positively impacts each person he encounters.”

Olympic Medical staff may be nominated for the BEE Award by patients, families and colleagues. Each honoree receives a certificate commending her or him on “Being Excellent Every Day.”

The certificate reads: “With deep appreciation for being excellent at what you do, for going above and beyond and making a difference for those around you every day.”

Honorees also receive a BEE Award pin and a gift bag containing a jar of local honey. A committee of healthcare workers review the nominations and select the final nominee, OMC representatives said.
