Help restore salmon habitat at tree planting event

The North Olympic Salmon Coalition (NOSC) and the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe are looking for seek volunteers to help plant native trees along a new side channel on the Dungeness River on Jan. 28-29 and Feb. 18-19.

Set for 10 a.m.-3 p.m., these upcoming work parties see coaltion staff and volunteers plant and mulch native trees and shrubs to improve water quality and create healthy habitat for the fish and wildlife; events are family-friendly.

Volunteers are asked to arfive by 10 a.m. for orientation. There will be a site tour at 2:30 p.m. Tools and gloves will be provided, along with snacks, tea and coffee. ring warm, waterproof clothes and boots, water, and a lunch.

The Salmon Coalition is aiming to plant nearly 12,000 trees this winter, NOSC representatives said.

NOSC is working with the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, who recently finished construction of a side channel on the Dungeness River — a project that created nearly 1000 feet of critical off-channel habitat for salmon.
