Local anglers to meet, talk crab and shrimp

The Puget Sound Anglers’ North Olympic Peninsula Chapter host an open-to-the-public general meeting at 6:30 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, April 19, at the Sequim Elks Lodge, 143 Port Williams Road.

People start gathering at 6:30 and the meeting starts at 7 p.m. Speaker Keith Beck, owner of McKay Shrimp and Crab Gear in Brinnon, will give attendees an overview of his business and will pass along tips and techniques for the upcoming shrimp (first opener May 25-28) and Dungeness crab seasons (early July).

The group will also have a short business meeting, fishing reports and raffle drawings following his talk. Raffles are for members only; join that night to participate in the raffle. An annual individual membership is $25 and a family membership is $35. Membership also includes The Reel News monthly newspaper.

Senior softball group seeking new members

Local ballplayers (men over 55, women over 45) looking for the fun and camaraderie of spirited softball competition are invited to join Sequim Senior Softball.

Active on the Olympic Peninsula for more than 15 years with a history of inter-league play in Washington state and Victoria, B.C., Sequim’s Grey Wolves play year round (weather permitting) Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 8:30 a.m. at Sequim’s Carrie Blake Community Park, 202 N. Blake Ave., with games starting around 9:45 a.m.

Interested players are encouraged to come out, sign up and get on the field. Bats and gloves can be provided. The team follows rules of Sequim Softball USA, with some added safety measures.

Moore, Thompson earn all-Peninsula honors

Sequim High senior basketball stars Isaiah Moore and Zack Thompson were named to the Peninsula Daily News’ All-Peninsula Boys Basketball team.

Moore, a first-team All-Olympic League pick started all four seasons for Wolves and was pivotal in hitting game-winning jumper and free throws in beating Port Angeles to snap six-year losing skid to rivals. Thompson, an honorable mention Olympic Leaguer, was a team leader for Wolves.

Port Angeles’ Parker Nickerson was named the team’s Most Valuable Player.

Golf group starts season

The Cedars at Dungeness 9-Hole Lady Golfers have started their season, kicking off 2023 on April 13 with the “Hate-em” contest. All attendees were able to play before it rained, group members said. There will be no golf for the group on April 20 because of a tournament at the course. The 9-Hole Lady Golfers are open to all women golfers. Players meet on Thursdays starting at 9 a.m. for a 10 a.m. game. For more information, call the pro shop at 360-683-6344.
