Saturday was the official blessing of the new Wally Sigmar field and Peninsula’s men weren’t about to let Whatcom’s Orcas steal the limelight.

Miguel Gonzalez, Daniel Gonzalez and Dean Gaynor teamed up for four goals in the span of 11 minutes to grab a 4-0 first half lead and Gaynor added some insurance with a score early in the second half as the top-ranked Pirates whitewashed Whatcom 5-0 on Oct. 1.

Daniel Gonzalez opened the scoring at the 25-minute mark, taking a feed from brother Miguel. Then Daniel set up Gaynor for a 2-0 lead five minutes later and Gaynor in turn fed Miguel Gonzalez for two more quick scores.

Peninsula (5-0-0 in conference play, 11-0-0 overall) outshot Whatcom 15-9.

Jared Wilson earned the shutout for P.C.

“We played a really good game and had a great first half,” Peninsula coach Andrew Chapman said.

Saturday’s win was the Pirates’ final game against the North Division; the remainder of the 2011 schedule is against fellow West Division teams.

That may prove to be a daunting task, as West teams are a combined 20-2-3 in conference play and the other two undefeated NWAACC teams — No. 2-ranked Highline and No. 5 Bellevue — are in the West.

“We expect it to get a lot more challenging,” Chapman said.

Pirates slam Skagit

There may be no more room for Miguel Gonzalez’s name in the Peninsula College record books.

The sophomore scoring star notched all four of Peninsula’s goals in a 4-1 victory against Skagit Valley on Sept. 28, to give him 18 goals.

That snaps the school single-season scoring mark of 15 — set by Gonzalez himself in 2010 — in just 10 games.

Peninsula gave up an early goal to Skagit’s Thomas Murrell but saw Gaynor feed Gonzalez for goals at the 16-, 19- and 35-minute marks for a 3-1 halftime lead. Omar Ambrocio earned the assist on Gonzalez’s final goal at 67 minutes.

“We came out flat and gave up an early goal but we dug in and got the job done,” Chapman said.
