Sequim slips in opening games

On Feb. 23, 2008, Sequim’s girls basketball squad topped Steilacoom 49-38 in the opening round of the West Central District playoffs.

It’s the last time the Wolves tasted a victory.

Sequim looked to snap that 22-game slide with a trio of games this week and had a good shot on opening night on Nov. 30 at Chimacum, but dropped a two-point decision to the Cowboys.

Sequim fell to Bainbridge an evening later and on Dec. 4, fell to rival Klahowya, 49-29.

Freshman Taylor Balkan led the Wolves with seven points while Caitlin Wiker and

Rylleigh Zbaraschuk added six points apiece, but Sequim had little answer for Eagle Carly McElwee. The Klahowya senior scored 24 points and added 16 rebounds as the Eagles increased a three-point first-quarter lead to a 27-14 advantage by halftime and 35-20 after three quarters.

The Wolves (0-1 in league, 0-3 overall) were slated to play at North Mason on Dec. 8 – results were unavailable at press time.

Sequim hosts Port Townsend on Friday, Dec. 11.

Bainbridge builds

lead, stops Sequim

Last season, Bainbridge’s Spartans beat Sequim by 34 points.

This season? Not as accommodating.

The host Spartans topped Sequim 74-31 on Dec. 1.

Rebecca Sharar, Bainbridge’s 6-foot 1-inch senior, led the Spartans with 14 points and 14 rebounds, helping the home-court squad build leads of 20-7 after one quarter, 40-14 at halftime and 62-18 after three quarters.

Zbaraschuk led Sequim with 13 points while Lea Hopson added eight points and Haleigh Harrison chipped in six.

An evening earlier,

Sequim looked to have a victory in its season-opener but lost a five-point lead late at Chimacum on Nov. 30, falling 41-39.

Hopson led the Wolves with 20 points and Zbaraschuk added nine points in her prep varsity debut, but the Cowboys sent the hometown crowd home happy.
