Sequim ends skid, tops Oly’s Trojans

A rebuilding season? Perhaps. But Sequim’s tennis squad isn’t getting pushed around.

After a pair of Olympic League losses earlier in the week, Sequim rebounded to beat Olympic 5-2 on April 23, a match shortened thanks to bad weather.

Kyla Hall earned the Wolves’ lone singles win, sinking Trojan No. 1 player Victoria Lagat 6-3 and 6-1.

Sequim (3-5) took all four doubles matches as Katrina Chan and Serena Okamoto downed Olympic’s Kristine Garcia and Jessica McMulen 6-2 and 7-6 (7-1). It took three sets, but Elizabeth Shore and Hannah Smith topped Olympic’s Emily Crosswaite and McKenzie Winter, 2-6, 6-3 and 6-3.

Ana Prorok and Hillary Smith won in No. 3 doubles play, topping Jennifer Balbas and Bria McGinley in straight sets (6-4, 6-1).

Calli Norman and Kelsey Feten dropped Olympic’s Kaitlin Bosshardt and Kylie Flores in straight sets as well (6-4, 6-2).

On April 21, Sequim fell to league rival Port Angeles 5-2. Hall shut out Alexis Corn (6-0, 6-0) in No. 1 singles play while Chan and Stacy Hanson won in No. 1 doubles play, edging Sam Manwell and Grace VanRossen 7-5 and 6-4.

To kick off the week, Bremerton topped Sequim 5-2 on April 19. Chan and Hanson won in No.1 doubles play while Ellen Cain and Hillary Smith won in No. 3 doubles.

Hall narrowly lost to the Knights’ ace in a third-set tiebreaker, as Bre Casias edged the Sequim senior 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

The Wolves travel to Silverdale to take on Klahowya, one of the state’s top 2A teams, on April 29. Sequim then hosts three home matches – May 4 vs. Kingston, May 6 vs. North Mason and May 10 vs. Port Townsend – to close out the regular season.

The Olympic League tournament is slated for May 15, followed by the 2A district tournament on May 20.
