Monday Musicale to meet

The Monday Musicale group will meet at noon on March 18 at at Joshua’s Restaurant, 113 Del Guzzi Dr., Port Angeles.

Following lunch ($20), attendees will be entertained by Joe Schipani, playing the digital accordion. Schipani said he enjoys playing jazz, particularly old standards from the Great American Songbook.

Sequim bookstore to host special story time

Pacific Mist Books, 122 W. Washington St., will host a St. Paddy’s Day Children’s Storytime with local storyteller and puppeteer Cathy Kelsay at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 16.

Have the “luck of the Irish” when you join Mother Goose (Kelsay) and her Fantasy Forest friends for a wee bit of leprechaun fun. Find out if the leprechaun finds his pot of gold, hear some shamrock songs and poems, plus lots of other March silliness.

OTA offering youth spring break program

Olympic Theatre Arts offers a Spring Break Youth Program, with workshops beginning Monday, March 25, and performances set for April 6 and 7.

Participants (third grade and older) will have the opportunity to learn all aspects of theatre, from acting, directing, stage management and design, to running crews and stage crafts, and learn “Plays from African Folktales.”

Under the direction of Youth theatre educator Marissa Meek, and instructor with more than 30 years experience, leads the program.

In “Plays from African Folktales,” actors and actresses go on a wild ride with Mr. Hare and Mr. Leopard, learn about friendship and trust from the trickster spider Ananse, soar with a turtle who wanted to fly all while chuckling along with the Man Who Loved to Laugh.

Tuition is $125 per student, with $10 off for additional siblings. Cost is $99 for early bird registration through Sunday, March 17. Scholarships are available for anyone in need, made available by the Benjamin N. Phillips Memorial Fund.

Antique road show comes to Sherwood Village

The Lodge at Sherwood Village, 660 W. Evergreen Farm Way, hosts “The Lodge’s Antique Road Show” from 2-3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20.

Learn more about vintage heirlooms and antiques from Darrel Reetz, a Port Angeles native who has more than 30 years of knowledge and expertise. He’ll be joined by a glassware expert and jewelry expert.

“If we don’t know the answer, we will find it for you, through our numerous contacts throughout the United States,” Reetz said.

Woodturners to meet in Gardiner

The Strait Turners Woodturning Club will be meet at noon on Saturday, March 16, at the Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road.

The presentation this month is a hands-on demonstration of wood coloring techniques.

The program will be a presentation of different ways to color wood, with hands on workshops. The workshops will include using iridescent paints, adding chameleon flakes or powder leafing, airbrush use and applying colored waxes. Participants will work on pre-turned candle holders to keep.

On April 27, Eric Lofstrom will demonstrate skew skills with the presentation, “Making the Cuts!”

Free demonstration set at Blue Whole Gallery

Marilyn Hiestand will be providing a free, hands-on demonstration of painting on silk from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, at the Blue Whole Gallery, 129 W. Washington St.

Hiestand is an accomplished in several art mediums but loves to work with fabrics. As a retired teacher but still a very active artist, she will be bringing her teaching skills to Blue Whole using silk painting for her demonstration. She will demonstrate techniques that all age levels can practice and enjoy.

“Silk is a great surface to paint on,” she said.

“Its luminosity shows colors of great variety. When died or painted, it has the fluidity of movement that is beautiful. However, like watercolor, it’s very unpredictable.”
